Yangarra Ovitelli Blanc 2023From original '46 vines next to the High Sands block. The '23 grenache wines are very pale in the glass, and they are all a degree lighter in alcohol due to the cool year (one I love). A vintage like this really illustrates the kinship with the avant-garde grenache of Gredos, and with Barbaresco, and refined Etna Rosso (Girolamo Russo in particular), rather than almost anything from the Rhône. Savoury, dried red fruits, cranberry, cherry and redcurrant, warm terracotta, bergamot, potpourri, sumac, ground cinnamon, star anise, so tightly coiled, but also tensile, finely expansive in its flavour delivery. Le Battistelle 'Battistelle' Soave Classico 2022Le Battistelle is simply one of the Soave Classico’s best producers. They have some of the most incredible hand tended terrace vineyards with vines up to 130 years old. There are records of the Battistelle vineyard going back to 1644. Fantastic volcanic subsoils plus the estate is classified “Viticoltura Eroica” or Heroic Viticulture which appears on the label of the Battistelle cuvee. It stands for the hard work that production of these wines requires.
Owned by Gelmino and Cristina Dal Bosco who after working for larger co-operatives in the region passionately wanted their estate, and started in 2002 under the Le Batistelle label. They own just over 9 hectares (100% Garganega) divided across four small plots all situated in the hills of Brognoligo.
The 2022 Soave Classico Eroica lifts from the glass with a savory blend of dried peaches and apricots, complemented by hints of fresh mint and crushed stone. It’s soothingly round in character, resonating with ripe orchard fruits and citrus-tinged inner florals over a core of tantalizing acidity. Its minerality comes forward through the close, as this plays out a sweet-and-sour act on the palate and hints of candied lime slowly fade. Petilia Quattro Venti Greco di Tufo Riserva 2020Quite a different beast to the 'entry' Greco offering. There's a palpable intensity, structure and savouriness to the wine. Peach, lemon curd and a refreshing saline grapefruit acidity all in the mix along with a little nutty nuance. The texture starts of creamy and round but is quickly usurped by a wall of drying, pithy tannin which draws everything in at the back leaving dry and lightly bitter, pleasing finish. Zalto BalanceThe idea behind 'Balance' was to design a glass that would bring out the best in new-wave artisanal/low-intervention wines that emphasise texture and structure as much as fruit. Michael Hinterleitner, whose family owns Zalto, explains, "We have been testing different prototypes for two years to create a glass that harmonises certain aspects of wines not often found in conventional winemaking."
So, after two years of intensive tastings and discussions with winegrowers and sommeliers, 'Balance' was born. Zalto recommends the glass for deep, complex whites-Chardonnay and full-bodied Riesling, for example-to fully show their depth and subtlety while harmonising aromas and flavours without concentrating one element.
