McHenry Hohnen Calgardup Brook Vineyard Chardonnay 2019Rock salt, smoke and seaweed on rocks - a wine that smells of the sea. But, oh how it thrills and fills into its fruit on the palate. Hazelnuts, almond blossom, masses of chalk-lined lime; cold white apples, gold-skinned. Long-limbed, rangy, breathtakingly graceful. It has a saline sparsity, yet draws a crescent line through the mouth, filling every corner with a cool lunar glow and the promise of fulness to come. The 2019 vintage was cool in Margaret River, with no shortage of rain. For those producers that handled the vineyards with detail and agile responsiveness, the vintage was a resounding success. The 2019 Calgardup Brook Vineyard Chardonnay is minerally and layered with graphite and flint laced into the aromatics. In the mouth, the wine is taut and spicy, but it has expanse and shape through the mid-palate onward, too. Through the finish, there's a saline/nougat nutty character: almond skin and walnut. Again those beautifully handled lees add something to both the feel of the wine and its aromatic profile. That is one of the hallmarks of these wines and its great to see at this level. Ample roundness and generosity, but there is zip and pep too. Salty minerality here! Very good Bourgogne. Better than its classification.

Alexis de Benoist Macon Villages 2021Golden colour. Deep and honeyed, grilled cashew and white flower aromatic. Fruit spectrum dances around the orchard and something slightly more exotic with a puff of white smoke putting a complexing note into the conversation. The palate follows suits with a lovely attack of sweet citrus and melon fruits spreading across the palate before a blast of limestone-linked austerity and tension pulls everything back into line. It's a wine I just loved drinking. you get Macon generosity and enjoyment alongside enough tension on the backend to keep you wanting another glass. This guys is a "watch-this-space" producer. Nectarine, cumquat jelly and rosewater, ginger and cinnamon, hazelnut, chamomile and mint, and while I’ve likely written some outlandish stuff here, in essence, it pretty much just smells and tastes like a very good Chardonnay. It has plenty of flavour, though it’s not heavy, hazelnut and salted pistachio, a subtle cultured butter character, a chalky and stony thing to texture, acidity is cool and fine, green mango and ripe lemon closes out a finish of excellent length. There is a sweet grassy/floral element with savoury coriander and juniper to the fore. The flavours ebb and flow on the palate gently pushing and pulling between savoury corriander/cassia bark and sweet vanilla. There is an almost confectioned element but it is soft and beautifully done. The flavours are long and lingering and there is a crunchy black pepper, green herb spice element on the close. PWS
