Happy days for me when I can taste Cabernet and Italian wine in the one glass. Two worlds collide. Black and red fruit, chocolate and licorice, florals and fine spicy oak treatment. It’s firm and medium bodied, almost tense with a slight jaggedness to its grainy tannin and crisp acidity – though it feels clearly defined and lively. Has a subtle green tobacco note along with leather that lends it an Italian drawing room charm. Needs a bit of time to settle down, but a lovely stylish wine it is. Even though this is 17 years old, the colour is still an amazingly deep garnet even if the rim is now transparent. Oo, that is rather lovely! Lots of evolution and subtlety, with a hint of quite attractive dustiness, on the nose. It does taste very much more like mature Cabernet (even Bordeaux) than anything informed by Sangiovese. Dry (but not drying) finish and really appetising – perhaps that's thanks to the Sangiovese. So it's all Cab on the nose and possibly Sangiovese on the finish. Long and playful. William Fevre Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses 2022DON'T MISS - A toasty nose features notes of smoky grilled shellfish, pear and algae. The dense and equally serious larger-scaled flavors don't have quite the same power yet they are clearly more refined on the markedly bitter citrus zest finish that displays outstanding length. This is exceptionally classy and while it too could use more depth, that is all but assured if given a chance. BURGHOUND

Vilmart Coeur de Cuvee 201580% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Noir from vines averaging 60 years old, the wine spends nearly 6 years on lees. Most importantly only the heart of the pressing is taken - 1400 litres instead of the usual 2100 litres, hence the name 'coeur de cuvee.'
The 2015 Brut Coeur de Cuvée is a pretty dense wine that belies its deceptively mid-weight structure. What surprises me most about the 2015 is how closed it is. In most years, especially warm years, Coeur de Cuvée is quite a bit more open and voluptuous, but the 2015 does not come across like that at all. Rather, it is super-classic in bearing, with tons of gravitas from the 60-year-old vines just waiting to emerge. There are none of the awkward herbal notes that penalize so many wines. Chapelle de Blagny Meursault-Blagny 1er Cru Sous le Dos d'Ane 2020This is an exquisite Pinot Noir with a name very few would ever have heard of unless, of course, they put two and two together with the Meursaults, and the like, above. This is, without doubt, the finest Blangy Rouge I have ever tasted. This was blamed on their setting, high on the Côte and yet this should have been a plus and not a minus point for these wines. Maybe they were just left behind in favour of more famous and familiar Volnays and Pommards. Well, this wine alone will set the record straight for this hamlet and for the future. As the world warms up, sites like this will no doubt be highly prized, and in 2020, the vintage played into its hands. This is one of the most expressive and downright delicious wines I have tasted in this entire campaign. It is deeply fruited, not heavy, but intense and completely refreshing and magical on the finish. I have awarded an extra half-point to this wine on this occasion because I want it to sit on a rare list in 2020. The dense, opulent and powerful large-bodied flavors brim with dry extract that imparts a sappy texture to the lemony and massively long finish. Not surprisingly for a classic Les Clos, this super effort is very much built-to-age and a wine that I would advise not touching for at least 6 to 8 years first. BURGHOUND
WORTH A SPECIAL SEARCH - 4.10 ha, principally the higher section but some lower towards Grenouilles – mainly planted before 1950 by that father of Willaim Fevre. Always the only wine in this – or pretty much any line-up of great Chablis that makes me think – Chevalier-Montrachet – but this year I see Chablis! Extra breadth to this aroma – almost a hybrid of the previous two wines – but then it changes gear, floral and mega-impressive – wow – I almost don’t need to drink it! Okay, for science ?? : This is not the most forceful or incisive but it has a mouth-filling fluidity that infuses the senses. Philip Togni Cabernet Sauvignon 2018Taking lots of air to show at its best, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a brilliant, classic, age-worthy wine from this great estate. It certainly shows the more structured, vibrant style of the 2018 vintage with lively acids, yet it has utterly classic Cabernet crème de cassis and almost blue fruits as well as Bordeaux-like notes of lead pencil, cedarwood, tobacco, and assorted floral nuances. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it brings rock-solid intensity, perfectly ripe yet building, firm tannins, and again, the vintage's freshness, purity, and elegance. It reminds me of a top Saint-Julien and classic, old school, structured Cabernet that will reward bottle age. The 2018 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru is very tight, but it was also racked just prior to this tasting, and Montée de Tonnerre is naturally a site that yields intensely mineral wines. The 2018 Chablis Vaulorent 1er Cru takes all the signatures of this small site and amps them up to the next level. Lemon confit, almond, dried fruit and floral notes lift from an intense, vertical wine endowed with real palate presence and depth. Seamless, ample and creamy, the Vaulorent is simply superb. SWEET SPOT, OUTSTANDING. A beautifully fresh and ripe nose; indeed this is ripe to the point that there is a hint of exoticism to the pretty nose of tidal pool, pear, apple and tangerine nuances. There is good verve and volume to the textured medium weight flavors that culminate in a balanced and lingering finish that coats the palate with dry extract.
