Fraser Gallop Estate Parterre Chardonnay 2022I see the Chardonnays from this season being quite nutty, and certainly texturally wide, which follows the conditions of the season. The wine is floral-particularly chamomile-with lashings of crushed nuts and red apple skins, jasmine and crushed shells, a hint of wisteria and shortcrust pastry. The acidity remains true to the house style here, which is verging on austere, certainly incredibly juicy, penetrating and spicy. Beautiful. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Nose is shy at first, then opens out to fine spice, sea foam, poached green apple, lemon curd, a flint-laden mineral lift and a hint of fresh peppercorn. The palate sings with fruit intensity and tightly strung Gingin acid, both of which bode well for time in the cellar. A delicious Chinese greens crunch and a frame of fine, voluminous fruit carefully wrapped in top-notch oak. (95) DECANTER
A riper vintage has only added more fruit definition to an otherwise savoury and super-fine wine. Some moreish sulphides tease the richer flavours of creamy curd-like lees and spicy, slick oak, with the fruit hovering between lemon, grapefruit and makrut; mouth-watering acidity too. The wines under this label have been quite a revelation in recent years. This one from the excellent '22 vintage is another cracker. It's a precise and elegantly crafted wine with a steely minerally core. Aromas of pear and quince paste with a little citrus tang. Well this is the Gin Gin clone from Karridale, gets the whole malo thing, and 40% new oak. Heavy bottles still, unlike Leeuwin and Cullen, who are leading the way in this respect.Powerful wine, and glossy, and buttery, cashew nut richness, toast. ginger and clove, with some struck match, pear and grapefruit. It’s a slippery viscous and powerful affair, toffee and grapefruit, mango richness, maybe a little bit brassy and bold, but saline and savoury to close, with a finish of fine length and chalky texture. Lalu Langhe Barbera d'Alba 2021Organic. Lalù’s Barbera from fruit purchased from Monforte’s San Sebastiano—a site that Lara Rocchetti and Luisa Sala believe is exceptional for this variety. Lalu Langhe Barbera d'Alba 2022Organic. Lalù’s Barbera just gets better. The new release is the first to include fruit from the new estate vineyard of Bricco Giubellini in Monforte. The vines here lie on Diano sandstone at a lofty 530 metres, an altitude that brings welcome freshness to warmer Piemonte vintages such as 2022 and 2023. The balance of the Barbera is drawn from fruit purchased from Monforte’s San Sebastiano—another site Lara Rocchetti and Luisa Sala believe exceptional for this variety.
Made with a mix of whole berries and bunches, the wine fermented and matured for eight months entirely in concrete. It’s a more powerful, sensual release than last year, still perfumed and vibrant yet more textural. The wine slinks out of the glass with pure red berries, violets and brown spices before turning towards more earthy shades of liquorice and woody herbs. The palate has joyous purity as well as a lovely mouthwatering quality from both the powdery tannins and the variety’s bright acidity while also hinting at Lalù’s light touch in the cellar. A first-class artisanal Barbera here.

Paitin ‘Bonina’ Freisa Paitin 2020This is a bit of a banger. Raspberry, almond paste, dried roses, a fair bit of white pepper and spice, aniseed too. It’s medium-bodied, frisky and fresh, plenty of red fruits, dried herb, a ‘mineral’ feel to it, not least with regards to acidity, peppery tannin, lots of energy, also kind of earthy and gravelly too, with a brisk finish of excellent length. The 2020 Freisa Bonina is another fabulous wine in the entry-level portion of the range. Bright and translucent, the 2020 delivers striking complexity and nuance. Rose petal, lavender, spice, mint and dried herbs all open in the glass. The 2020 is translucent, bright and wonderfully expressive. Syrahmi Garden of Earthly Delights Chardonnay 2021It walks to the beat of its own drum and it does so successfully. Lemon curd, wheat, honeydew melon and assorted floral notes work in with earth, bran and cedar. If you called it kaleidoscopic you wouldn't be exaggerating. It's not thick with flavour (it's relatively lean), but everything here both spreads and gathers. It’s a tight wine, distinct green olive and lime rind bite, a little sour yoghourt, and quite some acidity here, a powdery chalky texture, with an olive brine savoury finish of zip and good length. The 23 is built on ease of operation. Slightly more forward than the 2022 with a solid push of fruit, plenty of citrus zest, green apple and edging on some more ripe, seemingly juicy characters that expand out nicely. Punchy acidity freshens things up and the all too important salty twang, that we expect from Chantemerle, makes itself known throughout. Like all of Boudin's wines the balance is what will carry it in the cellar, if required, but for me this is right in the zone for more early drinking. Typically excellent. ROSCOE

Olivier Morin Bourgogne Blanc Chitry 'Constance' 2022Olivier Morin took over the family business in 1992, after a first life spent in the music world. The 14ha domaine is currently undergoing organic certification. When he took over, his parents were making just their three appellations: Aligoté, plus Chitryof both colours. The continuity of this approach is reflected in Olivier's 'Constance' cuvées, to which he has added an old-vine Bourgogne Chitry white called Olympe, after the original owner of the vines, and a single vineyard red, Vau de Puits. Piero Busso Barbera d'Alba Stefanetto 2019Stefanetto comes from mature vines in Busso’s San Stunet vineyard (see notes for the Barbaresco San Stunet below). The higher altitude (380m above sea level), age of vines (25 to 50 years old) and limestone rich soils all contribute to a deeper and more structured Barbera than the Majano. Accordingly, this wine is raised in neutral barrels of various sizes for at least 12 months. It is also released with one extra year of age.
This has more overt flesh, more plummy fruit, wilder notes and powdery tannins. In short, it’s a dark and layered Barbera of enormous character and length.

Correggia Barbera Bricco Marun 2019This is a classy single vineyard barbera. From 45-65 year old densely planted vines, the Marun was the brainchild of Matteo Correggia. He sourced fruit from sandy soils at the top of the hill with a sunny exposition and good air flow to stifle vine disease.
The 2019 Barbera d'Alba Superiore Marun is packed with scents of blackberry, underbrush, mocha, licorice, leather and cloves. There's plenty of density and volume, and yet forward aromas and flavors lead me to believe the 2019 is best enjoyed sooner rather than later. Voyager Estate Chardonnay 2023Tim Shand has made such a profound impact since taking over as winemaker in ‘22 and while it’s early days, gee what’s on offer looks very, very good. Vintage ‘23 is his first complete harvest. Already subtlety is apparent, although plenty of flavour here with stone fruit and citrus, wafts of lemon verbena and celery seed. It’s flinty, spicy and creamy with nutty lees. This is moreish and the savoury edge comes through in tandem with tangy and juicy acidity, and almost a pop of saline tang to finish. Impressive. One of the most common misconceptions in wine is that every wine is as absolutely good as it can be. Most wines, rather, are made to their price point, or to their position in the winery’s range of wines. I’m not sure if it’s relevant to point this out here – it may not be – but I loved it when winemaker Tim Shand said this week that he had re-positioned Voyager Chardonnay to simply be “the best wine that it can be. This wine has flavour and texture but it’s the length that gets you going. It shows smoke characters, grilled peach, lemon curd and a jasmine element. There are flint notes here, as a whisper – which is interesting, because Voyager Chardonnay generally doesn’t or hasn’t shown flint characters in the past. Vasse Felix DHJ1 Single Plot Chardonnay 2023In pure quality terms this is right up there with the Heytesbury release. It is though a cleaner, purer style, its grapefruit and stonefruit characters bell clear, its creamy mouthfeel so perfectly played and placed. I loved the 20222 release of this wine and I love this 2023 as well. It’s a wine of genuine power, noteworthy finesse and outstanding length. It is, essentially, chardonnay in all its glory. This set of wines from Verget in 2023 are such a pure delight and the Pierreclos En Tremblay a special highlight.
