Vilmart Coeur de Cuvee 201580% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Noir from vines averaging 60 years old, the wine spends nearly 6 years on lees. Most importantly only the heart of the pressing is taken - 1400 litres instead of the usual 2100 litres, hence the name 'coeur de cuvee.'
The 2015 Brut Coeur de Cuvée is a pretty dense wine that belies its deceptively mid-weight structure. What surprises me most about the 2015 is how closed it is. In most years, especially warm years, Coeur de Cuvée is quite a bit more open and voluptuous, but the 2015 does not come across like that at all. Rather, it is super-classic in bearing, with tons of gravitas from the 60-year-old vines just waiting to emerge. There are none of the awkward herbal notes that penalize so many wines. Bright saline notes extend the finish effortlessly. The 2015 is a brilliant Coeur de Cuvée. ANTONIO GALLONI

Paul Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jean Rouge 2022A more elegant, and more floral-suffused, nose reflects notes of red berry fruit compote that is certainly ripe but stops short of being jammy. There is a more refined texture to the middleweight flavors thanks to the relatively fine-grained tannins shaping the balanced and lingering finale. Vilmart Coeur de Cuvee 2016The 2016 Brut Coeur de Cuvée is an elegant, sensual Champagne. In other words, classic Vilmart. Crushed flowers, mint, chalk, slate, dried herbs and citrus peel are all beautifully delineated. Brisk acids wrap it all together in style. The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Champeaux 1er Cru stands out in this range, with its striking bouquet redolent of deep spice and floral notes. Macerated cherry, spice, freshly cut flowers and licorice all take shape, lifted by bright acids that confer notable energy. A few years in bottle will help this come together a bit more fully. Domaine Robert Groffier Gevrey Chambertin Les Seuvrées 2022Just under the Grand Cru Mazoyeres ou Charmes, limestone base here. The average vine age, like all of Groffiers sites, is very old, around 60 years here. The soil is sandy resulting in super fine tannins and sappy, bright fruit. Nicolas says “the soil here is deep, but it’s not loud”.
It’s overall impression is one of vibrancy and freshness. So pure and red fruited with lovely florality. A certain crunchy element sets off the super vibrant palate. A vein of saline minerality. Long, subtly broadening out on the finish suggesting further richness to come with time. Gorgeous and good Premier Cru Gevrey quality here. Excellent. ROSCOEThe 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrées has a lovely bouquet that exudes Pinoté, very pure and delineated, with seamlessly integrated oak—perhaps touching Premier Cru in quality. The palate is medium-bodied with a sapid entry. Tensile, with vibrant, slightly tart red fruit and a slight herbaceous edge on the finish (doubtlessly emanating from the stem addition), this is quite an absorbing Gevrey-Chambertin. I am intrigued to see it age, despite its openness and pliant tannins. Give this at least two years in bottle. The 2022 is certainly in a different league than the previous vintage. NEAL MARTIN
The Gevrey has been made with 20% new wood and one third whole bunch. Fresh mid purple. The fruit on the nose is a little showier than the Bourgogne, perhaps the proportion of younger vines, perhaps the whole bunches. Lemon confit, marzipan, spice and a whole range of tropical accents are dialed up in this exuberant, open-knit Champagne. This is an especially flamboyant style, but it works nicely. The mousse is especially fine, giving the Cramant a decidedly vinous feel. This is tremendous showing in a very hard year that was better in the Côtes des Blancs than in the Marne Valley, where rot was especially problematic. Dosage is 3 grams per liter. Larmandier Bernier Les Chemins d'Avize Grand Cru Extra Brut 2015The 2015 Extra Brut Les Chemins d'Avize Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru is a broad, ample Champagne that reflects both vinification in wood and time on the lees. Lemon confit, marzipan, dried flowers, chamomile, sage and spice build in the glass. Powerful and resonant, with no hard edges, the 2015 is terrific. Krug Grand Cuvee -172 NVThe 172ème édition, based around the 2016 vintage, is a delicate, floral and saline Grande Cuvée at this early stage in its life. The palate it taut, tightly wound, gradually unfurling into toasted fruit bread, rye bread and roasted nuts, wrapped around an intricate and taut lemon core. It's exceptionally long, spicy, rounded and spherical in shape. Notes of sweet unsalted butter round out the finish, which has such length, elegance and balance. 58% of the wine is from the 2016 vintage, which saw a lot of rain in the spring and close to flowering, with 42% from reserve wines. Not bone dry, and the sweetness shows a little on the finish at the moment even if it is perfectly balanced. More perfumed as it opens in the glass but the autolytic character is gentle.
