R. Pouillon Les Blanchiens Champagne 201550% pinot noir, 50% chardonnay
The 2015 Brut Nature Les Blanchiens is a 50/50 blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay picked in the eponymous mid-slope parcel in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. It was aged for 12 months in oak before tirage, then aged for five years in bottle. A deep golden color moves on to a nose that opens with an initial tone of white lilies, followed by melted butter suffused with white pepper. Creamy mousse on the palate accentuates the essential saltiness and highlights the rye crumb and fresh brioche autolysis. This is rich and generous, from ripe and expressive grapes, from oak vinification but also from 2015. The salty verve in the background, however, provides ample balance and freshness. Weinbach Schlossberg St Catherine Riesling Grand Cru 2021The 2021 Riesling Cuvée Ste. Catherine is from 60-70-year old vines on the midslope of the Schlossberg Grand Cru. This took a whole year to ferment and stopped at around 5g/L of residual sweetness. It's richer than usual for the domaine, but with the acidity of 2021, this actually sits well. The most subtle hint of orange blossom is all the nose wants to reveal. More temperature reveals an overtone of pineapple juice. A tiny flicker of smoky reduction appears, too. The palate is bold, clean-cut, serene and scented. This is the crystalline nature of granite making itself known. The pithy texture makes the mouth water even more. The aroma and the texture of freshly zested Amalfi lemon are on the long finish. This has body but no fat - a gorgeous synthesis of freshness and citrus, long and elegant. Real drive and much energy. Larmandier Bernier Les Chemins d'Avize Grand Cru Extra Brut 2015The 2015 Extra Brut Les Chemins d'Avize Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru is a broad, ample Champagne that reflects both vinification in wood and time on the lees. Lemon confit, marzipan, dried flowers, chamomile, sage and spice build in the glass. Powerful and resonant, with no hard edges, the 2015 is terrific. Krug Grand Cuvee -172 NVThe 172ème édition, based around the 2016 vintage, is a delicate, floral and saline Grande Cuvée at this early stage in its life. The palate it taut, tightly wound, gradually unfurling into toasted fruit bread, rye bread and roasted nuts, wrapped around an intricate and taut lemon core. It's exceptionally long, spicy, rounded and spherical in shape. Notes of sweet unsalted butter round out the finish, which has such length, elegance and balance. 58% of the wine is from the 2016 vintage, which saw a lot of rain in the spring and close to flowering, with 42% from reserve wines. The 2015 unfolds nicely with time in the glass, but I wouldn't think of opening a bottle anytime soon. A strong effort in a less-acclaimed vintage, Pol Roger's newly released 2015 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill opens in the glass with aromas of confit citrus, ripe orchard fruits and dried white flowers mingled with hints of honeycomb, freshly baked bread and anise. Medium to full-bodied, vinous and concentrated, with bright acids, chalky structuring extract and a pinpoint mousse, this inherently rather rich, gastronomic Champagne is quite tightly wound out of the gates and will reward a bit of bottle age. The 2022 Riesling Scharzhofberger Auslese is still closed on the nose. It takes a lot of swirling to awaken passionfruit and citrus hints. The palate is rich and concentrated with grapefruit-edged peach preserve, almost peppery with its grapefruit spice. Intense yet balanced, fresh, and harmonious. Citrus savor, tart and aromatic, highlights the essential and inherent finesse. Nothing is too much, yet there is baffling intensity. Beautiful. Grapefruit and peach flavors shine on the long finish. The 2021er Scharzhofberger Kabinett Alte Reben (an auction lot) is a barely fruity-styled wine which proves still quite restrained at first but already hints at stunningly pure and fresh notes of white flowers, minty herbs, lavender, gooseberry, white pepper, and smoke. The wine proves very intense yet airy and superbly pure and zesty. The finish is almost dry-tasting and hugely long and vibrating. What a classic Scharzhofberger! MOSEL REPORT
