  1. R. Pouillon Les Blanchiens Champagne 2015
    R. Pouillon Les Blanchiens Champagne 2015
    50% pinot noir, 50% chardonnay
The 2015 Brut Nature Les Blanchiens is a 50/50 blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay picked in the eponymous mid-slope parcel in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. It was aged for 12 months in oak before tirage, then aged for five years in bottle. A deep golden color moves on to a nose that opens with an initial tone of white lilies, followed by melted butter suffused with white pepper. Creamy mousse on the palate accentuates the essential saltiness and highlights the rye crumb and fresh brioche autolysis. This is rich and generous, from ripe and expressive grapes, from oak vinification but also from 2015. The salty verve in the background, however, provides ample balance and freshness. A rounded, gastronomic Champagne with much expression and a lasting, cleansing echo. Zero dosage. ANNE KREBIEHL MW

Putty and freshness and real zip. Yes! Super-refreshing with undertow. Long and just what you want from a serious aperitif champagne. JANCIS ROBINSON MW

Distinct, smoky elements on the nose with aromas of roasted almonds, crystallized ginger, croque monsieur, scamorza, preserved lemons and spiced pears. Medium-bodied, with sleek bubbles and tangy acidity. Toasty at the end with a long finish. 50% pinot noir and 50% chardonnay. JAMES SUCKLING

100% chardonnay from grand cru villages in the Côte des Blancs (Mesnil-sur-Oger, Cramant, Avize, Oger) from the 2008 vintage. 7g/l dosage

Luminous golden colour and fine cords of bubbles. The nose first reveals notes of citrus, candied lemon and yellow fruits. Then it evolves and reveals smoky notes of blond tobacco and roasted nuts. The finish is refreshing and long, ORPALE 2008 was imagined as a jewel of a cuvee. The 2008 Orpale is an exceptional, passionate cuvée that naturally has a special place at the table, served with gourmet aperitifs or with fine dishes during a meal. Domaine Wine Shippers, Importer

  10. Bollinger Special Cuvee NV 1500ml
    Bollinger Special Cuvee NV 1500ml

The NV Brut Special Cuvée is fabulous. Hints of pears, pastry crust and hazelnut lead to an expansive core of fruit. There is plenty of the signature Bollinger oxidative style in this rich, enveloping Champagne. Once again the Special Cuvée is one of the best Champagnes in its price range. ANTONIO GALLONI

… The complexity and richness of Special Cuvée is unparalleled among the entry non-vintage blends of every Champagne house, short of ascending to the mesosphere of Krug. Its grand recipe explains why, built on incredible depth of 50%-60% reserves. Triumphant complexity is a given at Bollinger, but it's the dynamic freshness and vitality that really set it apart as one of the most affordable Champagne benchmarks. (96) TYSON STELZER

Like its rosé counterpart, the latest release of Bollinger's NV Brut Special Cuvée is showing especially well, bursting from the glass with aromas of honeyed apples, crisp stone fruit, buttery pastry, ripe lemons and fresh walnuts. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and vinous, with a deep core of beautifully ripe fruit, racy acids and a pillowy  mousse, it's a charming, characterful wine that proves that Special Cuvée is firmly back where it belongs. 11. Larmandier Bernier Blanc de Noirs 1er Cru 2015
Larmandier Bernier Blanc de Noirs 1er Cru 2015
Since the Larmandiers felt they had picked a touch too early to produce their emblematic rosé in the 2015 vintage, they elected instead to produce the 2015 Extra-Brut Blanc de Noirs, an attractively pillowy, racy, medium to full-bodied Champagne redolent of freshly baked bread, orchard fruit and buttery pastry. Concluding with a long, chalky finish, it represents a fine success. WILLIAM KELLEY

The 2015 Brut Nature Blanc de Noirs 1er Cru is a new wine in this range that emerges from the deeper clay soils found in the southern part of Vertus. A brawny, potent Champagne, the Blanc de Noirs is endowed with tons of depth and some angularity that needs time to soften. It will be interesting to see where this goes in more favorable years. Gianfranco Alessandria Barolo san En Piasi 2019 1500ml
The 2019 Barolo EnPiasì is a tiny bottling of just 150 magnums, done with hand destemmed fruit. There's good depth, but I don't see the freshness of the best years, while the volatile acidity is problematic. Making wine on a very small scale presents a number of technical challenges, and that unfortunately shows here. ANTONIO GALLONI

  13. Piero Busso Barbaresco Albesanii Viti Vecchie Riserva 2016
Piero Busso Barbaresco Albesanii Viti Vecchie Riserva 2016
Very stylish and textural, with a fine-grained structure, dominated by red fruits. Firm tannins back up the nicely textured fruit, which shows great concentration. An intense wine showing such finesse.
    (96) JAMIE GOODE, Wineanorak

Introduced in 2015, Busso’s Gallina Viti Vecchie is drawn from a small parcel of 1953 vines planted in the heart of the Gallina cru. The soil in this part of the vineyard is rich in calcareous clay (bluish-grey marl), but there is also some sand. Piero Busso describes this wine has having more depth, structure and enveloping fruit than the younger-vine cuvée. Consequently, the grapes are macerated for up to 60 days with a submerged cap and the aging is in large Slavonian oak casks for 36 months, prior to another 36 months in bottle.

    Ceretto Barbaresco Bernadot 2021

Here's the star wine in this flight from Ceretto. The 2021 Barbaresco Bernadot is a beautiful expression with great balance and pretty aromas of bright berry, cherry-cranberry, pressed flower, balsamic aged vinegar, dark fruit and rye biscuit or something with dark grains. The wine shows great acidity and good intensity with a long finish, and it remains sprightly overall, carrying its medium fruit weight with grace. (95) MONICA LARNER

Ceretto's 2021 Barbaresco Bernardot is laced with dark cherry, grilled herbs, mint, tobacco and cedar. This is a decidedly floral, earthy Barbaresco endowed with fine balance and plenty of immediacy. This opens beautifully with some air, as the fruit emerges, wrapped by plenty of Bernardot muscle. This is classic Treiso. ANTONIO GALLONI

  19. Deutz Amour de Deutz Blanc de Blancs Vintage 2013
Deutz Amour de Deutz Blanc de Blancs Vintage 2013
100% chardonnay from Avize and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, with a little Oger, Chouilly, Vertus and 4% Ville Marmery; aged 9 years on lees; disgorged 31 May 2022.

There's a compelling contrast here between the elegance of the house in this cool, late harvest, and a real presence of confidence and intensity that encapsulate the strength of Avize and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. The dancing purity of the season furnishes a fantastic core of lemon, white peach, grapefruit and nashi pear, but faintly brushed with the brioche and honey of age, a quiet declaration of the slow-motion evolution of great things to come. The grand acidity of 2013 unites with a deep ocean of salt-infused minerality in a mesmerising upwelling of pure, crystalline chalk that glitters and froths though a finish of epic line and length. The cool, restrained mood of 2013 charges Amour with a surge of energy that thrusts it long into the future of potential, confirming a brilliant Blanc de Blancs and the greatest since the spellbinding 2008. Massolino Barolo Vigna Rionda 2017
The 2017 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda is flat out stunning. All the purest essence of Rionda comes through in a captivating Barolo that dazzles. Sweet red cherry fruit, kirsch, rose petal, licorice and blood orange are some of the many aromas and flavors that lift from the glass. Exotic and racy, the 2017 is a flat-out stunner. Now, for the million dollar question. Is it better than the 2016? Right now, I give an edge to the 2017 for its greater finesse and total sense of exotic beauty. But time will be the judge. I do look forward to tasting the 2016 and 2017 side by side! ANTONIO GALLONI

Bright red cherry, mint, potpourri, new leather, liquorice root. So fragrant. Fresh, very fine, tannin has a succulence, and they sit so well within the wine, melting through its core. Red fruits (strawberry in particular), tea and blood orange, and a superb long finish of precision and freshness. A beautiful expression of Vigna Rionda, and one that belies the heat of the vintage. The 2017 Extra-Brut Cramant Grand Cru is a rich, textured wine. Lemon confit, marzipan, spice and a whole range of tropical accents are dialed up in this exuberant, open-knit Champagne. This is an especially flamboyant style, but it works nicely. The mousse is especially fine, giving the Cramant a decidedly vinous feel. The 2015 Extra Brut Les Chemins d'Avize Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru is a broad, ample Champagne that reflects both vinification in wood and time on the lees. Lemon confit, marzipan, dried flowers, chamomile, sage and spice build in the glass. Powerful and resonant, with no hard edges, the 2015 is terrific. Krug Grand Cuvee -172 NV

The 172ème édition, based around the 2016 vintage, is a delicate, floral and saline Grande Cuvée at this early stage in its life. The palate it taut, tightly wound, gradually unfurling into toasted fruit bread, rye bread and roasted nuts, wrapped around an intricate and taut lemon core. It's exceptionally long, spicy, rounded and spherical in shape. Notes of sweet unsalted butter round out the finish, which has such length, elegance and balance. 58% of the wine is from the 2016 vintage, which saw a lot of rain in the spring and close to flowering, with 42% from reserve wines. The blend is made up of 146 separately vinified wines from 11 different years, and the oldest wine in the blend is from the 1998 vintage. (97) NATALIE EARL, DECANTER

Beautiful notes of dried citrus fruit, lemon curd and dried apples with hints of spices, dried flowers and subtle brioche. I like the polished and caressing texture and steady, refreshing acidity. It's fresh and even austere, with notes of ground spices. So vertical and firm. Structured and long.  (97) JAMES SUCKLING

Gentle, creamy, pure citrus aroma and ever so subtly toasty. Clementine, jasmine. So many gorgeous layers. Hint of ginger. This is intense and piercing. Not bone dry, and the sweetness shows a little on the finish at the moment even if it is perfectly balanced. More perfumed as it opens in the glass but the autolytic character is gentle. The 2017 Barolo Ravera is a powerhouse. My impression is that the 2017 is going to develop into something truly special. It has all the energy that makes this site so distinctive, but with an extra kick of fruit density and a whole range of exotic aromatics that make for a truly drop dead gorgeous wine. Bright red/purplish fruit, rose petal, chalk and white pepper build into a finish laced with searing intensity. This is such and impressive wine. ANTONIO GALLONI, www.vinousmedia.com

  38. Louis Roederer Cristal 2015
    Louis Roederer Cristal 2015
If the 2014 vintage was especially open and demonstrative, the 2015 Cristal is going to require more patience. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of citrus oil, crisp stone fruits, white flowers, crushed mint and subtle hints of buttery pastry, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a deep, concentrated and rather introverted core of fruit framed by chalky extract and animated by a pretty pinpoint mousse. This is a serious, vinous Champagne that has considerable substance to age and may well evolve along the lines of the lovely 1985. 95+ WILLIAM KELLEY, the wine advocate

  39. Pol Roger Winston Churchill 2015
    Pol Roger Winston Churchill 2015
The 2015 Brut Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill shows off the savory side of the vintage to great effect. Hints of dried pear, sage, mint, dried flowers, lemon oil and chamomile open gradually in this mid-weight, lithe edition of Pol Roger's tête de cuvée. The 2015 unfolds nicely with time in the glass, but I wouldn't think of opening a bottle anytime soon. Readers will find a nervy Winston Churchill marked by notable freshness and vigor more than size. This is a fine effort in a vintage that has proven to be far trickier than most observers originally envisioned. Dosage is 7 grams per liter. Disgorged September 2022. (95) ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

A strong effort in a less-acclaimed vintage, Pol Roger's newly released 2015 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill opens in the glass with aromas of confit citrus, ripe orchard fruits and dried white flowers mingled with hints of honeycomb, freshly baked bread and anise. Medium to full-bodied, vinous and concentrated, with bright acids, chalky structuring extract and a pinpoint mousse, this inherently rather rich, gastronomic Champagne is quite tightly wound out of the gates and will reward a bit of bottle age. Stylistically, it is somewhat reminiscent of a modern-day version of the 1985. (94+) WILLIAM KELLEY, The Wine Advocate

Subtle and restrained pastry nuances with a hint of mushroom. Lots of seriousness and generosity of fruit but in a more restrained, quiet style. Gentle autolysis with mellow apple flesh and some earthiness, bright and classic. Elegant, with reserve wine complexity. Brisk on the finish with a nougat edge. Great stuff. DECANTER

  42. Vietti Barolo Brunate 2019
    Vietti Barolo Brunate 2019
The 2019 Barolo Brunate is a powerhouse. Black cherry, plum, spice, lavender, mocha, gravel and scorched earth all build as this virile, potent Barolo struts its stuff. The Brunate is another super-impressive wine in this range. To be perfectly honest, the Brunate has never been one of my favorite wines here, but the 2019 is undeniably great. Perhaps the combination of parcels Vietti has today explains the multi-dimensional vibrancy that comes through. This is simply magnificent. (98) ANTONIO GALLONI

    Vietti Barolo Ravera 2020
Coming from the hill of La Morra (the fresher corner of the Barolo region), the nose of the 2020 Barolo Ravera boasts a lovely complete bouquet of licorice, rose petal, and fresh cherries, with a bright lift. Raised only in large cask, this medium-bodied Barolo is refined on the palate, with fine tannins, a silky mouthfeel, and a balanced and harmonious feel. It offers a Burgundian aesthetic and a long, graceful finish. Drink 2025-2045. (97) AUDREY FRICKE

  44. Henri Giraud Grand Cru MV18
    Henri Giraud Grand Cru MV18
The MV 18 is a classic Giraud Champagne. Apricot jam, tangerine peel, spice, honey and hazelnut give this mid-weight, classy Champagne tons of complexity and nuance. Readers will find a Champagne of notable purity and finesse. There's plenty of Giraud intensity, but in a mid-weight style that is hugely appealing. The blend is 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay, all from Aÿ, based on 2018, with a blend of reserve wines that span vintages 1990 through 2017. Disgorged: November 14, 2022. ANTONIO GALLONI

This is the bottled essence of Henri Giraud, with the unmissable stamp of Aÿ Pinot Noir. Child of the ripe, voluminous yet fine 2018 vintage, this is replenished with wine from the house's famous perpetual reserve, created in 1990, and is loaded with promise. On the nose, the generous and bold fruitiness is seamlessly integrated into the soft, smoky oaky tones. Dried apricots and sweet nectarines meet exotic spices and candied orange. The concentration does not amount to too much on the pulpy-juicy palate. Prickly bubbles bring a notion of vibrancy and freshness to the rich whole. ESSI AVELLAM MW

  45. Elio Grasso Barolo Runcot Riserva 2016
Elio Grasso Barolo Runcot Riserva 2016
The 2016 Barolo Riserva Rüncot is quite possibly the single greatest wine I have tasted in more than twenty years I have been coming here, with the possible exception of the 1989s and 1990s. Deep and powerful, but not at all heavy, the 2016 dazzles from the very first taste. Dark cherry/plum fruit, menthol, lavender, licorice and mocha saturate the palate in a Barolo of extraordinary richness and intensity. The 2016 spent four years in 100% new oak, and yet there is no trace at all of wood. Magnificent! (100) ANTONIO GALLONI

  46. Ceretto Barbaresco Asili 2021
    Ceretto Barbaresco Asili 2021

Made with organic fruit from a vineyard that has been in production since the mid-1970s, the Ceretto 2021 Barbaresco Asili shows very pretty floral tones of lilac, lavender and violet. Those are followed by bright tones of tart cassis and red berry. Everything about the wine feels fine, elegant and tight. This vintage offers a superior quality of fruit, and the wine closes with balanced acidity and silky tannins (97) MONICA LARNER

The 2021 Barbaresco Asili is the most delicate and sensual of the Barbarescos. Crushed red berry fruit, mint, spice and kirsch are all laced together. Bright acids and clean mineral notes give the 2021 notable tension and energy. The 2021 is a gorgeous wine that shows more young classic austerity than Asili sensuality, at least today. ANTONIO GALLONI

Showing the site's intense aromatics, the 2021 Asili opens with heady aromas of rose, violet, perfumed berry and exotic brown spice. All about elegance, the bright palate delivers juicy red cherry, blood orange, spiced cranberry and a hint of hazelnut accompanied by fine-grained tannins. It's well balanced, with bright acidity KERIN OKEEFE

  48. Massolino Barbaresco Albesani 2020 1500ml
    Massolino Barbaresco Albesani 2020 1500ml
The 2020 Barbaresco Albesani has more substance and depth than the straight Barbaresco. The differences between the two wines today aren't that marked at the outset, but that comes with aeration. Macerated cherry, plum, spice, lavender, rose petal and sage develop with time in the glass. All of the richness and power of Albesani comes through. For readers who want to understand what Albesani is all about, this is it! ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

From the village of Neive, the Massolino 2020 Barbaresco Albesani shows more balance at this young age next to the estate's classic Barbaresco. This single-vineyard expression also has more depth with dark berry nuances, cassis, blue flower and crushed limestone. Those floral aromas emerge with pretty intensity. The wine's tannins are very fine and silky. Some 4,000 bottles were made. (94) MONICA LARNER, The Wine Advocate
