Eugenio Bustos was the founder of the winery and the first to put vines in the ground. He began the groundswell for what is considered today to be one of the great Malbec producing regions on the planet. While most of the focus is on Mendoza the cooler reaches of the Uco Valley plays beautifully into malbecs suave fruit profile lending a little more aromatic lift, fresh snap and vibrancy. For our money we see this relatively new region as a bit of hot-bed of great Argentinian malbec.
We tried through a few levels of the wines from Bustos and this was easily the hit of the trio. Why? It was definitely about the freshness and energy of this cuvee. The others felt encumbered by either overripe clunky fruit or heavy-handed oak. This was the sweet spot of perfectly ripe, lush dark fruits and crisp tannins that melded perfectly together.
On the nose its sweet blackberry compote fruit is so inviting while wafts of sweet and savoury spice like clove and age entice even more. Mid weight but not shy to show off a little with gobs of ripe blackberry, black currant and black plumb fruit and we think that's exactly what you want. Despite all that it feels nimble and at ease. Deftly handed oak and singing along.
