This is a wine that serves two masters; you get weight and texture and ripeness. You get breadth too and bags of flavour but it never fully takes you into the bosomy, disco-ball realm. Instead, there’s buffering lees and phenolics that draw the girdle strings on the effusiveness of the fruit.
Grilled nuts and meal frame out wafting peach flower and wood smoke. lemon and peach pith. It's about quality fruit and it's not afraid to show it. Fleshy and ripe, mushroom broth and flowers all tethered to a core of acidity which drives the wine across the palate. It suits you if you want chardonnay with flavour but one that doesn't get top-heavy and tumble over.
Ultimately, it encapsulates the two men behind it – beautiful fruit produced by one of the country’s greatest viticulturalists and then handed to a chardonnay specialist. Classic and great Aussie chardonnay! MICHAEL MCNAMARA
