Eleni et Edouard Vocoret
In many ways Eleni and Edouard epitomises the 'new Chablis' - young growers with strong winemaking principles, perhaps more artisan in their approach, perhaps offering a more 'personal' take on Chablis and its wines. NEAL MARTIN, The Wine Advocate
They are currently producing two wines: Chablis "Bas de Chapelot" and Chablis 1er Cru "Butteaux." Bas de Chapelot comes from 3ha just beneath Montée de Tonnerre while the Butteaux parcel is 0.3ha. Vincent Dauvissat is a mentor and a source of inspiration for the Vocorets. JASPER MORRIS MW
Not heard of this domaine? That is not at all surprising as this is only the third vintage of this tiny estate. You may be thinking the name sounds familiar though? The name Vocoret has been around for a very long time in Chablis and Edouard is the 7th generation winemaker from the family, who has decided, with his wife Eleni, to begin a solo project, with the help of his father who has given them just 4.89 hectares to work.
The formula though is quite different from their families larger and more well-known estate, here everything is done by hand, the vineyards farmed meticulously and along organic principles, the ferments are conducted with wild yeasts and only old wood us used. These are just some of the principles they learned while working alongside Dauvissat, perhaps this is in part why these wines are so good, they have learned from the master.
Interestingly in interviews they speak more about the sites and the dirt than their winemaking, reminding me a little of another new gun in Chablis, Patrick Piuze. From what we have seen this is a producer to start buying up now, I have the feeling that they will quickly become saught after and as small as they are I think it will not be long before these become harder to get. Great wines made by two young guns with a lot of history to draw on. ROSCOE
