67/33% chardonnay/pinot noir; fruit from Derwent Valley and East Coast; disgorged March '21 after 14 years on lees; 2.6g/L dosage. The glories of long lees age are expounded to full effect here in a wondrous panorama of texture and secondary and tertiary complexity. Tasmanian chardonnay has attained a majestic place of glacé pear and grilled pineapple, backed with the fig and spice of pinot noir. All the toasty, spicy, honeyed and dried-fruit personality expected of EJ Carr is here in full measure, upheld with lemon zest energy and tension. Dynamic Tasmanian acidity and pinpoint phenolic grip are perfectly played, and the lightest touch of dosage is all it calls for.
