    Handpicked Highbow Hill Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
    This wine is from a single high-performing block that has had a number of excellent vintages over the past 15 years. It is a monoclonal wine of G9V3 Cabernet Sauvignon, an unfashionable clone in some circles, but in this vineyard, on this hill, a stunning example of the  variety. The fruit was hand harvest in late-March and yields were low but of excellent concentration and character. The must was fermented in static red fermenters and the wine was aged in French oak barriques, 40 per cent new, for 15 months.

    This is a superbly elegant Cabernet wine. This special wine, our very first Highbow Hill Cabernet, has superb perfume and purity of fruit. It is an elegant Cabernet Sauvignon that will age well over 20 years, but is ready for theenthusiast now. GARY BALDWIN

    The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon is dense, pliant and wonderfully expressive. Ric Forman's wines are always on the restrained side, but the 2015 packs a good bit of punch. Sweet red cherry, raspberry, sage, mint, and rose petal overtones all add to the wine's precision and nuance. In 2015, Forman took in fruit from Thorevilos, which he co-manages with David Abreu, but ultimately decided to add that juice to the Cabernet Sauvignon rather than bottle it separately. Dollops of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec round out the blend. This is one of the classiest wines of the vintage. ANTONIO GALLONI

    Forman's 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is fabulous. Rich and beautifully layered in the glass, the 2017 has gorgeous depth and a touch of exoticism that is so appealing. Ripe red berry fruit, floral overtones and a touch of spice are all laced together. Just bottled, the 2017 is super impressive, even in the early going.     86/6/4/3/1% cabernet sauvignon/petit verdot/malbec/merlot/cabernet franc. Reaching heights of near perfection, '18 was a vintage responsible for wines just like this. Supple intensity, concentration of flavour without a gram of weight, the length of flavour possessed only by very healthy, perfectly ripe and balanced grapes.     Sporting a slightly different label now, with the house in a fetching sort of purple. The splash of colour works well. Here we have 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, 4% Malbec, 3% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc all grown on the estate at Wilyabrup.

    Blackberry and boysenberry, sage and mint, fetching floral perfume, baking spice and vanilla custard oak. It’s medium-bodied with pleasing density of fruit, plenty of fine grained graphite tannin, cool acidity, so svelte and composed, with a long pencilly finish. Needs a little more time for the oak to integrate, but the feel of it, its balance and shape, mark it out as an excellent wine. (95) GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

    The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is absolutely impeccable. Best of all, it won't require years in the cellar to be enjoyable. In fact, it is quite expressive today. Juicy dark cherry, plum, mocha, spice, leather and cinnamon are some of the many notes that flesh out in the glass. Silky and supple, with no hard edges, Ric Forman's 2018 is a thing of beauty. That will be helpful as the wine ages, but it also means the Camartina does not have the opulence readers are likely to expect in this warm, dry year.     Cabernet and Craiglee don’t always fall off the tongue easily, but a shame for those who seek out only the shiraz accolades, cabernet is fiercely good in this vineyard.

    This has that succulence, that glide and slippery glisten, sweet but (medium weight) dark fruited, blueberries and mulberries with brined black olives, mint, white pepper and brambles. It’s effortless and mouth-watering, a refreshing expression of cabernet with a coolness and finesse. It slips along so merrily, quietly complex, that texture superb and the vitality up high.     It’s not all shiraz at Craiglee – cabernet still features, even if it's losing ground. It would be a shame to disappear. This is good. Currants and cassis, menthol and licorice, very earthy – almost a terracotta aroma – and oodles of sweet cedary oak. Full bodied, with firm yet ripe tannins and definition across the palate.     The 2020 Guidalberto is a gorgeous, classy wine. Less opulent than it can be, the 2020 impresses with its energy and drive. Sweet red cherry, plum, mint, rose petal, cedar and pipe tobacco all take shape in this super-attractive, mid-weight offering from Tenuta San Guido. There’s a bit more Merlot in the 2020, but Guidalberto is increasingly made from lots that don’t make it into Sassicaia, which explains the style of recent vintages. This is a terrific showing, especially considering the recent bottling. It’s a fine relative value in Bolgheri’s high-rent district.

    The 2017 Turpino is quite reticent, which is surprising given the style and personality of the year. Black cherry, pine, menthol, licorice and chocolate develop nicely over time. Readers should give the 2017 at least a few years in bottle, as it is not at all ready to drink now. The 2017 embodies the house style at Querciabella these days nicely. The wine is rich and deep, but not at all overdone. (95) ANTONIO GALLONI

    40% Cabernet Franc, 40% Syrah, 20% Merlot grown in a north-facing vineyard in Grossetto in the Maremma. Biodynamically certified. Aged for 16 months in fine- and extra-fine-grained French oak barriques, of which up to 20% were new.
    Lustrous deep crimson. Deep red- and dark-fruit nose with hints of dark spice. Savoury rather than sweet or ripe on the nose... Hint of earth and dried moss. Lush red and dark fruit with a muscular structure that is completely integrated with the fruit. Hedonistic, long, and with loads of appeal. Great fun to drink. (17+) WALTER SPELLER MW

    Diana Madeline. The name evokes a lot of emotions, for what the woman stood for then and what the wine stands for now. The 2021 vintage equals 50 years of cabernet sauvignon plantings at Cullen. When released in early 2023, it was on what would have been her 100th birthday. It’s a wine that can come from nowhere else, so strong is its sense of place. Expect to swoon over aromas of roses, violets and mulberries doused in baking spices, a ferruginous quality as much as detailed if persuasive tannins. It’s complex, complete and structured.     The grapes for this wine come about 82% from our own block in Mitch Patin’s Lloyd Vineyard on West Soda Rock Road planted in 1998 towards the southern end of Alexander Valley on the banks of the Russian River. 11% comes from the Larrick Vineyard that we farm, and the remaining 7% is Malbec from J. Rickard in Cloverdale.

    As always, this wine was produced more like a Pinot more than a Cab. Fermented in open-tops with native yeasts, punched down by hand, and racked to barrels before being aged in 2nd fill French oak barrels for 15 months.

Grapes harvested by hand, crushed and destemmed in stainless steel tanks where natural and inoculated fermentations proceeded with pump-overs twice a day. After alcoholic fermentation left on skins for 12 days and matured in 225l French oak barrels for 12 months. Certified and bottled on the farm.

    Made from the two red grape varieties I think the Clare Valley does best.

    I love a wine where it takes me only a couple of seconds to form an opinion. This was love at first sight, or sip. Red and black berries, mint and leaf, a violet perfume, tobacco and all that, but it’s the dense, yet light palate that pulls you in. It’s packed with tannin, feels fine in the acid department, has this inky ferrous thing going on, which is wonderful. Pushes through with red fruits, black tea and super length, cool acidity ringing clear. Grand wine. Does the Clare Valley proud. GARY WALSH

    Wine has been part of Victoria Ordóñez’s life for as long as she can remember. Her father, José María Ordóñez, was a pioneer of the Spanish wine industry, distributing fine wines across the Province of Malaga since the ’50s. Although Victoria’s own professional career took off in a different direction – she studied to be a doctor and has a PhD in Medicine – in 2004 she decided to enter the wine business, initially combining it with her work as a health service administrator.
    Victoria admits that she owes everything to the Austrian oenologist Alois Kracher, with whom she worked side by side making Málaga wines until his death in 2007. It was at this point that her career took a fresh turn as she decided to focus exclusively on what had become her passion – the world of wine.
    Tasting: Bright red fruits, fennel, and other Mediterranean herbs, chocolate, and violet aromas. Maroon color and fine tannins lend a pleasing structure. Vibrant with red berries and spicy flavors, the wine is at once concentrated and fresh. Beautiful silkiness and great finesse with a very fresh finish.

    BLOCK 2 on the Hay Shed Hill vineyard was planted in 1975 to the Houghton clone of Cabernet Sauvignon. These old dry grown vines have sunk deep roots into the gravelly loam soil profile providing the nutrient basis they need. Block 2 has a steep northern facing aspect maximizing the sunlight interception by the vines providing ideal ripening conditions. 
    COLOUR: Dense dark red to black colour of great intensity.TASTING NOTES: Ripe berry aromas of great intensity with underlying dusty and earthy characters. There is depth to the nose indicating there are reserves of complex aromas yet to develop. The palate is substantial with intense and fully ripe, fleshy sweet fruit filling the mid palate with great palate extension driven by the ripe and mature tannin. The mouthfeel is robust but the tannins are smooth.CELLARING: This is a strong wine with ripe tannin and strong fruit depth indicating it will benefit from careful cellaring. The expectation is that the wine would benefit from 10 years of maturation. HAY SHED HILL

    Heavy bottle. Rich, ripe but slightly wild mulberry and blackcurrant fruit. Strong, herbal leafiness pressed through the luscious fruit but the wine comes with a core of bitter dark chocolate and vanilla-pod sweetness. Balsamic extraction and density with interesting szechuan lift through the end. Powerful and velvety and very big. JR
