White Rock Vineyards

AVA: Stags Leap Napa Valley
Situated on the eastern side of the Napa Valley approximately 300 feet above the valley floor, White Rock Vineyards is defined by its volcanic soils and bedrock. A 64-acre valley shaped over millennia to form a natural bowl, the soil substructure is compressed volcanic ash, holding little nutrients, and yielding small berries which produce deep, intense, and rich concentrated flavours. This always seems to me to be an under-the-radar wine producer. The wines are consistently excellent. The White Rock Vineyards are at Napa’s southern end, adjacent to the Stags Leap AVA. Originally planted in 1870, they were revived by the current proprietors, the Vandendriessche family, in 1977. The vineyard is all hillside and, in certain vintages, the steepest segment of White Rock Vineyards is allocated for a limited production Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. ROBERT PARKER
