Felsina Chianti Classico 21'
Buried in the far south of the appellation, Felsina is a magical place. There's a quintessential Tuscan beauty to the sprawling farm that straddles the Chianti Classico/ Chianti Colli Senesi border. A sense of timelessness and authenticity seem to live in the walls, olive groves and vineyards which ultimately seeps into the wines.
Their Chianti Classico has long been a standard bearer for brooding 100% sangiovese that so masterfully captures the rusticity of the variety and the place, while maintaining a beauty and aristocratic feel. In production, nothing much ever changes down here. 100% sangiovese fruit, simple fermentation and large wood maturation. There's an abbey-like look and feel to the barrel hall here and the wines continue the theme, being made in a fundamentalist manner that is unyielding but also means the wines are preserver of the sangiovese "faith".
The just arrived 2021 vintage is one of the best we've seen in recent times; pure sangio; wild and full of flavour, a "noble savage" of a wine. Descriptors listed below in Antonio Galloni's review below touch on the essence of this wine - earthiness, tobacco, dark fruit, spice. It's an absolute cracker and, if you love sangiovese, then you need this wine in your cellar.
Of the vintage too Galloni is expansive:
The young 2021s (from Felsina) will give readers a very good idea of what makes this vintage so compelling. The Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi both possess a level of fruit purity and overall harmony that is compelling.
Do not miss the 2021. In the cooler months ahead while the fires crackles in the background and grilled meats are on the menu, you'll thank me.
