WEDNESDAY 7th SEPTEMBER 6 to 8:30PM
Valenciso is one of the most modern of the traditional producers, or the most traditional of the modern producers. I love their wines, which offer good typicity and drinking pleasure, and I think they deserve more attention than they get. LUIS GUTIERREZ, The Wine Advocate
We can't begin to express how exciting it is to have European winemakers back visiting the country and we are absolutely thrilled to have one hosting a masterclass for us in September, especially one of this calibre.
Diego Santana crafts wines for the highly regarded Valenciso in Rioja Alta. This is an estate that is one of a band of exiting small producers focused intently on expressing and defining terroir in the region. This may sound like a no-brainer for fine wine aficionados, but in Rioja the status quo has been for homogenisation and wholesale marketing of the region for many years, losing many of its intricacies and character in the process.
Valenciso sits in the far north of Rioja Alta, in Ollauri, a few kilometres from Haro. This is a 'commune' noted for its calcário soils, soaring altitudes of up to 600 meters and Atlantic-influenced climate and paired with Valenciso's impressive collection of old vine sites, the resulting wines are striking for their perfumes, finesse and focus. Reflecting their rocky, rugged sites with raw clarity.
This masterclass will no doubt reframe what you think about Rioja and Spanish wine. We have some incredible wines in the line-up including 4 vintages of their excellent Rioja Reserva and a pair of their revered '10 Anos Despues' wines, which are bottled 10 years after they are made. All this for $50.
