When Michael Trembath and Virginia Taylor formed Trembath & Taylor 30 years ago, the Italian wine landscape in Australia was still dominated by raffia covered Chianti bottles and flagons of Soave. So, to say that the idea of importing the best of Italy's vinous renaissance was not exactly a sound business plan, would be an understatement. But they pressed on and aren't we lucky they did!
The've been responsible for introducing some of the great brands to Australia - think Pieropan, Jermann, Poggerino, Brancaia, Ca del Bosco, Conti Costanti, Fuligni, E Pira and the list goes one and on. These are now all household names but at one time, Michael jokes, he drank more than he sold. Moreover, these days with Matt Paul as partner, the pair have continued to source the best of Italy's emerging talent, almost always ahead of the curve.
Along the way, Trembath has been a force for education via his encylopedic knowledge of the topic and his boundless generosity. I can't think of anyone in the industry or any private Italophile in Australia today who hasn't benefitted from Michael's passion for Italian wine. We here at PWS count ourselves as lucky for an association that dates back that full 30 years.
It was a great dinner and below is a list of the wines on offer.
