"For me I have tried a lot of vin santo, and nothing sits like this for quality and price”, says a certain notorious sommelier I was tasting with. Made in an oblong vessel of some 120 litres. The wine is not topped up and left for five or six years. Malvasia and trebbiano. Relatively youngish estate, making outside of the Chianti Classico area, where they also make table wines. Already gaining some cult kudos. Sold in 375ml size.
Golden orange hue. Smoke, raw honey, nuttiness. Sweet smelling but intriguing in the mix of spice and floral/citrus fruit character. Slides into the palate with richness, nutty-honeyed character, herb notes, layers of flavour and stains the palate with its sweetness. There’s some old fruit character, dried fruit, dry spice, but it pops with freshness too. Excellent example. MIKE BENNIE winefront.com.au September 2015
