Capital wine shows have been a very important part of the Australian wine landscape for decades. Originally designed in part to assist winemakers identify potential  issues or faults with the wine making – these days they provide and important publicity opportunity for all producers. Small upcoming makers have put them selves on the map with a big win at a major show and consistent medals and trophies are a huge sense of pride to established brands. The show system works the same way across the country – wines are served to a panel of judge’s blind – ie they do not know what wines are in the line-up (class) or what order they are in. The wines are tasted, and scores awarded on what the Judges see in the glass. Typically, there are two Judges in a tasting group and an associate (junior judge). After the panel has tasted through the flight scores are collated and medals awarded – sometimes with considerable discussion. Once the top wine shave been selected a trophy is awarded to the top wine of the class,  then the trophy winners are tasting side by side by all judges for all classes and a overall winner wine of the show is nominated. There are lots of different shows – regional – capital city and National. Each have different groups of Judges and of course the results are subjective. We hope that by coming along and tasting a section of the top wines you will have a better understanding if your tastes align with that of the Judges of some of the bigger wine shows. We asked our resident wine Judge Gabrielle to pull together a selection of some of the top performing wines from last year’s major wine shows. These performed very well severed blind to a group of expert judges and we felt it would be great to have them lined up next to each other so you too can give them a test. This is a free tasting but we request that you book a place. On Tasting: Chardonnay 2020 Santolin Gladysdale Chardonnay, Yarra Valley
