Domaine Armand Rousseau is revered as one of the grand old domaines of Burgundy, resplendent with 14 hectares (half Grand Crus) and noble old vines. This is one of Burgundy’s greatest domaines any way you want to look at it – in history, in holdings and in quality of wine.

It used to be said that the three ‘special’ wines, Chambertin, Chambertin Clos de Bèze and Gevrey Chambertin Clos St Jacques were among the greatest in Burgundy, but that the rest of the stable was relatively unexciting. In recent years there seems to be a much greater consistency of quality across the range. Though Eric’s influence is evident in this respect, the actual style of the wines has changed not a jot from the previous generation. JASPER MORRIS MW

With wine, but especially with Burgundy, it often pays to buy the producer first and the vintage second. Rousseau is of course one of Burgundy’s most storied family-owned and operated domaines. ANTONIO GALLONI

Perhaps one of the most influential figures in the movement towards domaine bottling and marketing at a time most producers sold to negociants, Charles helped to pioneer what is now the norm of the region for the top producers. He famously said once during an interview: “if we affix our name on the label, we must be the best possible.”

The domaine owns a staggering array of grands and premier crus.  Included in a total holding of 14 hectares is a whopping 2.15 hectares in Chambertin and a total of 4.38 hectares across the other major Gevrey grands crus.  These are among the finest, longest-lived and sought-after wines in Burgundy. ROSCOE
