Robert Weil Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling Trocken 2021 what a wine!!!! A strictly once off discount on a reference point Riesling.

A vintage Wilhelm Weil, the great man himself, thinks may be the best he has ever made.

this is a stunning example of the diamond-bright brilliance of the top 2021 vintage German dry rieslings! Excellent aging potential. STUART PIGOTT, jamessuckling.com

It is a vintage for true Riesling hounds and those who delight in the deliciously bracing drama on the palate that only Riesling can offer… In 2021, these wines came with a spine-tingling thrill and a freshness that harks back to glory vintages of the past. Two thousand twenty-one is a vintage for an enthusiastic “buy, buy, buy!” for all who love Riesling with real tension and drive – and that goes for dry, off-dry and sweet wines. ANNE KREBIEHL MW, Vinous Media

this was a classic German vintage in every respect. Not a modern classic, as there have been almost in series since 1988. But a real, true classic from those long-lost times... Lightness and thrilling freshness paired with straightforwardness, bright clarity and enormous density at moderate alcohol levels: We can probably agree on this character for the 2021 white wines STEPHAN REINHARDT, Wine Advocate

The 2021 harvest marked a return, after a string of warm vintages, to the cool classicism of finely carved, bright, mineral-driven wines. ‘I am convinced that in ten years’ time people will recognise the quality of this vintage for its finesse, just as they did with 2004, 2008 and 2012,’ Oliver Haag said. The wines do seem to prove him right, with their firm elegance, assertive acid and well-defined aromas. DECANTER

After the last four warm years, this vintage is after a long time again a “classic German year” – accompanied by many challenges and hard work, but with a satisfying end. The 2021 vintage promises very clear, filigree wines with an extraordinary inner density and a wonderfully finesse-rich acidity. CORNELIUS DONHOFF

His dry wines are clear-cut, strait-laced, linear, of great precision and altitudinal freshness. They age brilliantly. In tasting Turmberg and Gräfenberg side by side is a delicious delineation of two sites in various expressions. ANNE KREBIEHL MW, Vinous Media 2023

Wilhelm Weil is enthusiastic about the 2021 vintage. The striking acidity of the vintage is well buffered by the potassium stored in the grapes and allows the Rieslings to shine and dance despite their substance. This was not foreseeable in the fall. But the "enthusiasm curve" rose steeply with the tasting of the young wines in the spring, so Weil is now convinced in the summer that the 2021 vintage will be celebrated in a few years and decades as one of the great ones. For himself, it is also clear that he has not yet processed a better one. STEPHAN REINHARDT, Wine Advocate

Robert Weil has been one of the icons of German wine culture for many years. Nothing but the finest Rieslings are produced. And as more than 100 years ago, the wines are distinguished in terms of their origins and their style. STEPHAN RHEINHARDT, The Finest Wines of Germany

Yeeewww

So good. Here, before I start my rant, perhaps it should be noted that Wilhelm Weil is well within his rights to label and sell this wine as a GG, in fact, anyone else would jump at the chance to own this Cru and be able to label it as such. However he refuses to budge from his idea that the one “Grand Cru” bottling they will have remains the “house vineyard” of Grafenberg. I admire his adherence to his values but I also wonder if it confuses some people as to the importance of this site in the region? Anyway, it IS a “Grand Cru” Riesling and it tastes like it.

God, I love the wines of Robert Weil. As consistently great as any Riesling producer on the planet. Not consistently good. Consistently great!

You fold in the epic 2021 vintage and it’s a recipe for lightening, which is exactly what it delivers. Riesling that leaves you feeling like you are tapped in to the mains.

I have had this chat with Michael, many times and over a lot of years and I can’t say it has always been while entirely sober. The basic premise is this “there are only two great white varieties. Riesling is King! Many people make great examples, from diverse places around the world. There are only a small group of those ultra elite producers. Like in any style. Robert weil is right near the top of that tiny group. His wines are now the equal of any being made on the planet” the extended version is what other producers and then usually there is some disagreement because Michael doesn’t understand all the great styles out there…

2021 IS THE BEST VINTAGE IN YEARS! So many people, including myself, got caught up in the hype around a few recent years. It started to feel like every vintage was the greatest thing since sliced bread. A lot of it was not marketing nonsense, ze Germans really struck gold with a string of “off the wall” vintages, 2015-2020 all excellent. They had one thing in common, they were all unusually warm. It was that extra presence and upfront appeal that really took us all in. For good reason too, the wines were/are super.

However, what 2021 does that the preceding vintages did not, is deliver the spine tingling, shake at your knees, palate quivering freshness that we all love from these wines. This is a genuinely great year that I, and most of the Rizza nerds around the world, think people will look back on as one of the greatest ever. I suspect that, as a broad statement, the 2021s will eclipse the recent years as they have better stuffing and tighter frames. Given some patience these are the kinds of wines that simply change in their delivery of youthful purity, over very long drinking windows. Morphing and sliding from one form of beautiful into another over decades.

This is the best Turmberg I have tasted young. It will likely be the best Turmberg I taste with some age too. It has all the Weil traits in abundance. Sizzle. Concentration and power. Intensity. Drive. Metric tonnes of mineral depth. Extract and phenolics to add grip, but also to buffer some of the youthful vigor. Length out the wazoo. Yet it feels composed and beautifully well shaped.

It’s an everything wine.

I tasted it the other day, again, and the importer has some to spare. So, happy days. I have also added a special dozen price, along with the usual sixer, as I would love to see people grab cases of this and bury them in a dark corner of their cellars somewhere. It will be the best $83 you are likely to spend in a while.
