Prum Mosel Riesling 2024

Both traditionalist and trailblazer, Joh. Jos. Prüm and its Mosel Rieslings have set the standard and been a touchstone for generations of winemakers and wine lovers alike. DECANTER

On an anecdotal note, a mature Prüm Spätlese was the only wine ever to almost make me commit an act of violence, when in a wine competition that shall remain nameless my fellow judges would not give it a gold medal. MICHAEL SCHMIDT, jancisrobinson.com

Few estates in the world can claim to have maintained the highest quality standards uninterrupted for half a century and more.  Joh Jos Prüm, the most famous of the many Mosel wine estates bearing the Prüm name, is one estate that can.  Since the early 1920’s its wines have been among Germany’s best, Rieslings with the Mosel’s vivacious aroma and racy elegance in its highest form. STUART PIGOTT, The Wine Atlas of Germany

On the 2024 vintage
2024 yielded stunningly light-footed wines with a rarely seen combination of inner density and precision at the top… The 2024 wines already offer some fruity and herbal presence, but everything is still quite subdued and work in progress: They will need time! The fruity and sweet wines are all very much in line with the expectations linked to their Prädikat. The bulk of the production is at Kabinett level, and only small quantities of Spätlese (let alone Auslese) were produced. Yields were rather low in the Mosel and even frightfully low in the Saar and Ruwer. MOSEL REPORT

BUYERS GUIDE: 2024 is a must-go-to vintage for lovers of classic and ethereal Mosel lightness and elegance! The sweet spot of the vintage is Kabinett, which can be as bright as in the finest vintages. If Spätlese is your thing, the finest from 2024 exhibit a great sense of brightness and lightness. The few noble-sweet wines show great finesse, but a backload on older vintages is certainly a viable option….The only real downside to 2024 is that the top wines will be rarer than usual given the impact on yields: Speed will be of the essence! MOSEL FINE WINE REPORT

The stars have aligned at Prum with the 2024 vintage; a classical cool vintage, low yields with incredible depth of flavour and a price drop. Read on, this is a vintage not to miss!

As a previous buyer we are sending you the offer first to say thanks for your support. These will be sent more widely in a few hours - warning, this is a phenomenal vintage for lovers of classic and ethereal Mosel rieslings!

After a run of warm vintages, 2024 marks a thrilling return to a cooler, more classical Mosel. The wines are breathtakingly pure: crystalline rieslings charged with slate-driven minerality, shimmering acidity, and a sense of weightless precision that only the Mosel can deliver. Cool citrus, green orchard fruits and smoky mineral notes unfurl across the palate, while the vintage's electric energy promises decades of evolution in the cellar.

The excitement doesn't stop with the wines. For the first time in years, prices have moved in the right direction. We haven't been able to offer a Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett for under $100 since 2020, yet here we are. The price reductions extend across the range, making this one of the most compelling opportunities to buy Prüm in recent memory.

The Mosel Report captured the vintage perfectly: "2024 is a must-go-to vintage for lovers of classic and ethereal Mosel lightness and elegance." Early critics have praised the wines for their remarkable delicacy, precision, and lingering salty minerality.

Forget Porsche, Mercedes, or Volkswagen. For me, Joh. Jos. Prüm embodies German perfection. Year after year, they produce some of the world's most captivating rieslings, despite working in one of wine's most marginal climates. The family has been rooted in the Mosel since the 12th century, with the estate itself established in 1911. As Stephen Brook observes, "The estate remains where it has been for decades: at the summit."

Decanter agrees: "No winery has become more iconic for its singular, even stalwart expression of the Mosel than Joh. Jos. Prüm. The wines of J.J. Prüm are a celebration of the German wine classification system, Prädikatswein—luminous, ethereal expressions of Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese."

Today, Katharina Prüm leads the estate as the fourth generation of the family, having guided the winery for more than two decades, while her father Manfred remains a constant presence. Their vineyards are spread across many of the Mittelmosel's most revered historic sites, including Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Graacher Domprobst and Bernkasteler Badstube.

According to Jancis Robinson, the estate's vineyards "have never been plagued by phylloxera," meaning around 95% of the vines remain ungrafted. Many are 40 to 50 years old, contributing to the extraordinary purity, intensity and longevity for which Prüm is renowned.

I loved the charm of the 2023s. They were expressive, graceful wines that wore their hearts on their sleeves. The 2024s are cut from different cloth. A cooler growing season, coupled with devastating spring frosts that dramatically reduced yields, has produced wines of extraordinary concentration and tension. These are rieslings that hum with minerality and nervosité. Their fruit is tightly coiled, their acidity laser-like, and their structure built for the long haul. Katharina Prum particularly likes the ethereal character of the 2024 rieslings and, despite the low yields admits, “I would choose this vintage again in a heartbeat.”

There’s very little Spatlese and even less so Auslese. Hardened on supporters will notice a few cuvees are missing. There's a wild streak running through the 2024s: smoky, flinty, slate-inflected notes that many consider the hallmark of the estate. Right now, they're all energy and potential, demanding patience from collectors. Give them time and they will reward you with the kind of complexity, finesse and longevity that have made Joh. Jos. Prüm one of the most revered names in the world of wine.

Cheers
