Silent Way
This is a busmans holiday for partners Matt Harrop and Tamara Grischy (and their three children, Jai, Ivy and Sofia) who purchased their small property in 2007, 10 years after they were married. They have planted 1.2ha of chardonnay, and buy semillon and pinot noir from the Quarry Ridge Vineyard at Kilmore. The name comes from a Miles Davis record made in February 69, regarded as a masterpiece and one of the most inventive recordings of all time. The labels feature artwork originally created by friend Daniel Wallace for their wedding, turned into labels by friend Mel Nightingale. Earthworms, birds, snakes, friendship and love are the symbols for Silent Way. JAMES HALLIDAY
We're proud to say we hitched up to this wagon in the early days of its life. Having said that, it was a bit of a no-brainer and those with an eye on the talent in the Aussie wine industry will know why. The label is the vinous "love child" of winemaker, Matt Harrop (Shadowfax and now Curly Flat) and wine auction house supremo, Tamara Grischy. The couple bring together a deadly combination of a coalface understanding of what the consumer wants and talented winemaking to make that a reality. There are four wines under the label to date (pinot noir, chardonnay, gewürztraminer and semillon) and all come from vineyards in the "parish" of the couple's home in the Macedon Ranges. While they're all superb renditions of the varieties, the pinot noir and chardonnay are the "front men" of the label and have already garnered a huge following amongst their many fans. In saying that, all the wines are notable for somehow splicing seriousness with accessibility. PWS
