Tucked into the farthest reaches of the Sonoma Coast appellation, brothers Andy and Nick Peay, alongside partner and winemaker Vanessa Wong, have created something truly special. Peay stands as one of the great modern success stories in wine, built on a commitment to cool-climate viticulture, meticulous vineyard work, and an uncompromising approach in the cellar.
For Andy its inception was a lightbulb moment one night while cooking and drinking with his brother Nick, which led him to quit his Wall Street analyst position and pursue a career in wine. The two’s love of the more restrained European-style wines they frequently drank drew them down a path that would irrevocably change their lives. Andy, inspired, travelled further and later studied at UC Davis, and shortly after a harvest at Cain Vineyards in Napa, the deal was sealed; they were doing this wine thing together.
Shortly after Nick, already heavily involved in the wine industry, met and married the talented Vanessa Wong, already a highly regarded winemaker. Together, the three began their search for the best cool-climate site in California that would allow them to craft wines with precision, detail, and a sense of place, not just power, a Burgundy-influenced mindset with California fruit; the antithesis of the wine being popularised at the time.
From the outset, this has been a project driven by precision, patience, and belief in site. What began as a remote, marginal piece of land has, in less than a generation, been transformed into one of California and indeed the United States’ leading producers. It is a story not just of place, but of people: a close-knit team of family and collaborators who have steadily refined their vision into something distinctive and enduring.
With that, we are absolutely thrilled to have owner Andy Peay visiting us in May. He has brought with him an incredible collection of back vintages wines spanning the Peay range, along with current releases. This will be an incredibly rare opportunity to explore the wines, and having Andy here only makes it that more special. With two courses from the Bellota kitchen, this will be an event not to be missed.
