P & A Trio - Chardonnay, Pinot and Grenache
The P & A wines are the brainchild of two winemaking wizzes, Burgundian Nico Potel and friend Beaujolais-based Stephane Aviron (hence P & A). Nico is a miles-a-minute ideas man, he understands that most people can’t afford to drink Burgundy every day, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have standards! Yes, I’m including the royal ‘we’ here. Brace yourself, these are some of the best value French wines you’ll find – for $18 each in a straight dozen, Ken Bruce has gone completely mad!
Together with the help of their winemaking contacts, they’ve ventured to the Languedoc to make chardonnay, pinot and a grenache/syrah blend. They’ve compromised on nothing, finding top growers and making the wine themselves. Nico is proud of these wines, they’re not a money-making throwaway for him – when we visited Burgundy last year he served all three alongside his Burgundy Crus and kept asking, So what do you think, what do you think? (and without waiting for our answers offered, They’re bloody good eh!’).
To the wines, the chardonnay is a staff favourite. One of my esteemed colleagues joked the other day ‘Gee I hope the bosses never check what’s on my wine account, because they’d only think I drink this!’ Its ripe core of nectarines and tangy citrus is threaded with a subtle minerality and ginger spices, it’s incredibly delicious.
The pinot offers a cushioned core of cherries and violets tempered by some subtle earthy tones of moss and tobacco leaf. There’s no mistaking its pinot DNA, though no need to take it too seriously.
Lastly, the grenache syrah blend is the boldest of the trio, luring you in with sweet spices and raspberries and a spine of savoury tannins. It’s balanced, delicious and immediate.
If you’re not prepared to compromise on your wine standards but aren’t feeling overly flushed, then these are for you. We need to make way for the next shipment so we’re offering these at red-hot prices as a one-off. Straight dozens of the pinot and chardonnay bring the wines down to $18 each, or the Grenache/Syrah just $15 each!
Cheers
