Following on from the Great Value Mixed Dozen and the white cellar pack, here’s the second half of the duo — six reds chosen not just for immediate drinking, but for their ability to evolve and improve over the next decade or two. These are all wines that deliver exceptional value while holding the structure, pedigree, and depth that reward patience.
To start, two classics with impeccable track records: Wynns Cabernet, a benchmark Australian Cabernet that has proven its cellar credentials for generations, and Château Sénéjac, a Bordeaux that in 2022 has produced one of its finest wines to date at the estate. Both are genuine 10–20 year prospects, the kind of long-lived value that’s rarely seen at this level.
Sangiovese also shines in the form of Le Cinciole Chianti Classico. Too often enjoyed young, the best Chianti ages beautifully, its firm tannins softening into layers of savoury spice, leather, and tobacco. The 2022 is especially exciting — with only one wine made at the estate, all the top fruit that normally goes into their Gran Selezione and other top-tier reds has been channelled into this one bottling. Alongside it, Moorooduc’s latest Mornington Pinot Noir shows why the best Australian Pinots deserve at least a little time in the cellar. Plush yet racy, it’s built to carry its elegance forward for years.
No red collection would be complete without Shiraz, and Clonakilla’s O’Riada is a sure bet. We recently tasted a 2016 with winemaker Tim Kirk, and it was singing — proof of just how gracefully this wine develops with time. To round things out, a curveball from Argentina: Colomé Malbec. A rich, black-fruited wine that will slowly unfurl to reveal cocoa, leather, and woodsy complexity, it’s a treat for anyone who’s never experienced great aged Malbec.
Together, these six reds offer outstanding value and age-worthiness — whether you’re tucking them away for five years or (in some cases) two decades, they’ll more than reward the wait. And if you can't wait? Who cares! They are drinking beautifully now.
Moorooduc Estate Pinot Noir 2023

Deep red with a tint of purple; flowery and fresh green herbal aromas, the palate is intense and full, with ample cherry and plum flavours laced with dried herbs, a lovely core of sweet ripe fruit, the finish lingering on well with fine, drying tannins. Delicious! HUON HOOKE, The Real Review
Moorooduc Estate is one of the true pioneers of the Mornington Peninsula, established in 1982 by Richard and Jill McIntyre. From the beginning, their focus has been on crafting wines that speak clearly of site, with Pinot Noir at the heart of the estate. Over the decades, they have developed a reputation as one of Australia’s great family-run producers, with an approach rooted in thoughtful viticulture, minimal intervention in the winery, and a dedication to expressing the subtleties of their region.
The Estate Pinot Noir is the flagship expression, drawing fruit from the family’s mature vineyards. It combines the region’s hallmark generosity of red and dark berry fruit with fine acidity and savoury nuance, making it both approachable in its youth and capable of graceful development in bottle. With its balance of purity, texture, and finesse, it stands as a benchmark example of what Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir can achieve.
Clonakilla O'Riada Shiraz 2023

A cool season, a cool wine. Highly perfumed with florals, black pepper, red fruits dipped in Middle Eastern spices and a whiff of bresaola. Barely mid-weighted, the fine sandpaper tannins add texture, with bright acidity adding a lift to the finish. It’s hard to resist now. (94) JANE FAULKNER, Halliday Wine Companion
Every vintage, for a while there, seemed to be the “earliest on record”. 2023 was the third cool Canberra season in a row, and was the latest harvest in over a decade. O’Riada Shiraz is grown on both Clonakilla’s estate vineyard, and on other Murrumbateman/Canberra District sites.
I cannot fault this wine. It’s so well spiced, without being excessively so. It’s rushed with cherry-plum fruit, it’s both refreshing and satiny, it folds, carefully, cedarwood and deli-meat into the fruit, and the tannin is a masterclass of the fine, filigreed kind. After all that, or over-arching it, is the fact that it’s a delightful drink, pretty, floral, solid where it needs to be, bright and balanced. Personally I’d have no hesitation in buying this wine. Le Cinciole Chianti Classico 2022

Fragrant and savory, with aromas of cherries, pomegranates, rose petals and touches of pepper and spices. The palate is medium-bodied and lively with polished tannins, offering purity and clarity of fruit with a subtle earthy note in the finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. JAMES SUCKLING
The 2022 Chianti Classico is the only red wine from Le Cinciole in a challenging vintage marked by devastating hail in August. Dark cherry, plum, leather, incense, menthol and mocha infuse the 2022 with striking textural depth and resonance. There's real substance here, not to mention tons of character. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous
Wynns Coonawarra Black Label Cabernet 2023

SPECIAL VALUE - It's hard to not have high expectations for this wine and yet each vintage you have to be impressed with its poise and delivery of beauty in your glass. Cassis and subtle hints of Ribena. Black cherries, creeping ivy and crushed volcanic rock. A hint of lilac and bramble. The wine stands tall with its confidence and primary fruit focus with artful foundations of fine tannins and sinuous acidity. Once again it is tailored to perfection, highly drinkable now and yet with an ageless grace in 5, 10 years and more. Sometimes the original is just too good to go past. (95) SHANTEH WALE, Halliday Wine Companion
The label has had a slight tweak; it nows notes that this wine is “The Original”. The word Wynns is now larger too. Bottle shot here is the ‘old’ label.
Classic Coonawarra Cabernet. I tasted this over the course of a few hours and with every sip, these were the words that came to mind. It’s medium in body, laced with fine-grained tannin, leafy in an infused way, shows notes of peppercorn and mint, and has the perfect pitch of redcurrant and darker berry flavours. It feels squeaky clean in the best of ways, is taut but not wrenchingly so, and feels generally immaculate. You could cellar this for a long time and it would hold true. The longer I sat with this the more it just seemed to extend. (95) CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front
Deep, bright, intense purple colour in the glass, the aromas no less fresh and bright, loaded with mulberry, blackberry and cherry-liqueur aromas. Crushed-leaf and raspberry too. The fruit is doing all of the talking. The wine is similarly sprightly and fresh on the tongue, with a little grip from the youthful tannins, which provide a solid but neatly tailored grip on the back-palate and aftertaste. It's very youthful and primary: a very herbal style of cabernet. Nice now, but a little cellar-time would work wonders. HUONE HOOKE, The Real Review
Senejac 2022

The 2022 Sénéjac, which has had the guidance of Jean-Michel Laporte (Château Talbot) in recent years, was picked September 12-29 and aged in 30% new oak. It has a perfumed bouquet with red berry fruit, cedar and blood orange scents. More graphite notes emerge with time and impart a Pauillac-like flair. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins and a silver bead of acidity. The oak feels polished, but not overbearing, thereby allowing the finish to really shine. This is a wonderful Haut-Médoc, one of the best wines that I have tasted from the estate. (92 - 94) NEAL MARTIN, Vinous
Vibrant, scented and delineated, showing expressive blue fruit, hibiscus, cassis, minerals and spices. The medium- to full-bodied palate is evenly packed with fresh and fine tannins. Graceful, velvety yet al dente. Spot-on balance with a lengthy but tightly wound finish. Already attractive, but wait three years if you want a more complete Bordeaux. This has the potential to develop for at least another eight to ten years. (94) ZEKUN SHUAI, JamesSuckling.com
Colome Estate Malbec 2022

Estate Malbec mixes grapes from different terroirs and altitudes where they have vineyards: 1,800, 2,300, 2,600 and 3,111 meters!
Dried herbs, smoked tarragon and cherries with a touch of roasted spices. Full-bodied on the palate with structured, fine-grained tannins and a long, pristine finish. Well-structured. Drink from 2025. JAMES SUCKLING
The 2022 Malbec Estate blends grapes from various Calchaquí Valley sites. Its 15 months of aging in 225- and 500-liter barrels with 25% new oak contributes complexity and character. Deep purple in color, it opens with blackberry, plum, spice and floral notes against an oaky backdrop. The palate mirrors these elements with juicy fruit, a plush texture, active tannins and a hint of chalk. The 2022 is long, flavorful and representative of northwest Argentina. JOAQUIN HIDALGO
