Here's the brief: delicious reds that are perfect for warmer spring weather; light on their feet, vibrant and packed full of flavour… and of course, great value.

Ah, but wait. One more little twist here too. We are following suit from the mixed dozen and we are matching three reds from Australia to three red from France and see who comes  out on top. Of course the only real winner here is you. Corny, but true.

Some classic wines of course that we just had to put in like great Burgundy, crunchy village Beaujolais, great Aussie Grenache, tasty Rhone, Tassie pinot and a local Yarra gamay that we think you are going to love.

Trapeze Yarra Gamay 2022
Many will be familiar with Brian Conway, founder of the seemingly ubiquitous Barossa label Izway.  Prior to Izway's founding in 2004, Bri made wine between his home base in Western Australia, also covering vintages in Sonoma County, Alsace and Beaujolais at Château Bluizard where he met future Izway business partner Craig Isobel.

During time at Izway, Bri started playing around with Victorian fruit under a new label Trapeze, a hobby project of sorts.  Eventually settling in Coburg in Melbourne's north, the pressures of travel and family saw him sell his share in Izway in 2018.  Missing the production side, he has kicked Trapeze to his main focus, and with significant efforts to source top grade fruit and polish packaging and presentation, this reimagined project offers some serious and compelling wines.

Wine; Red/Garnet in the glass. Fresh picked raspberries, cherry, ripe strawberry, fresh aniseed, cured meats/jamon savoury lift and dried thyme Oregano from Whole bunch. Palate really cool feel, heaps of energy/vibrancy without being overly primary from Carbonic. Heaps of complex layers within. Raspberry, Jamon, cherry and slight cola notes. All the fruit surrounded with more of the dried herbs and ever so slightly savoury notes/kalamata olives. Just the right amount of tannin/grip, Nullarbor type length of flavour and cleans up with great acid line.

Stephane Aviron Beaujolais Cote de Brouilly 2021
Stephane's family has been wheeling and dealing in Beaujolais for generations. Based in Fleurie, his father owned an oenological laboratory and worked as a wine broker where, after completing his studies, Stephane returned to work in the family business as a wine consultant and a winemaker in Chénas. His experience there and history in the region brings a depth of knowledge and intimate detail of the terroirs he now works. That, when combined with Stephane's obvious talent makes for a formidable combination.

The appellation of Côte de Brouilly sits on the high slopes of the extinct volcano Mont Brouilly and is surrounded by the larger appellation of Brouilly. This wine brings together the broody darker elements of the volcanic soils finesse by the cool, hillside sites it clings to. It opens with rich red and dark berry fruit, ground and toasted spices and earthy tone that washes over the fruit slowly as you swirl in your glass. Its concentrated and richly fruited but that is all backed by some fine cut tannins that string the dark fruit together, as it sashays  across the palate with cherry, plums and black forest fruits. It feels serious but in typical Aviron style still feels light on its feet.

SC Pannell Smart Grenache Clarendon 2021

The 2021 Smart Grenache is very fine and bright with punctuating, pop rocky acid through the fruit. This is incredibly bright and exciting - the lingering spool of tannins and acid merge through the finish. There is pomegranate and raspberry pip, red licorice, fennel flower and a smattering of saffron. This is a fantastic, elongated wine that will age gracefully. (96) ERIN LARKIN, wineadvocate.com

Very lithe and fine, pure and frisky, sheathed in silty tannin, juicy in a way and with weight set to medium or just under. Succulent red cherry, brick-ish dusty elements in woody spices and twiggy, dried herbs, a faint fennel note, salted liquorice faintly there. Fragrant too, oh so very much. Savoury scents through with just ripe cherry underlying. That tension is so appealing and refreshing. Compelling drinking. (96) MIKE BENNIE, winefront.com

Really attractive ripe strawberry with orange peel aromas that follow through to a medium to full body with dusty tannins and plenty of lemon rind texture to the vivid fruits. (95) JAMES SUCKLING

M.F Laurent 'Il Fait Soif' 2022

NEEDS NOTE

Anim Clarence Pinot Noir 2021

This is easy pleasure. Supple and bright fruited, sour-sweet in cherry characters, a touch of raspberry, some twiggy-clove woody spice in the mix. Soft, ripe feel to the wine, a little cloying but lots of joy to it all. Tannin is a bit absent, but there's a coolness to the wine that gives some shape. Neat and tidy, good drink. MIKE BENNIE

Anim winemakers and owners - Max and Siobhan Marriot met at the Gnadenberg Church on the Hill of Grace. Wine, it would seem, was in their future, with a touch of divinity at the start.

Now they had returned to Australia - Max is the general manger at Clarence House , an award-winning wine property in the Coal river valley and works closely with the Anna Pooley and Justin Bubb in the production of these wines. Whilst on the side Max and Siobhan have their own wines project Anim - focussed on uncovering small plots of older vine interesting Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from across the state. The Tinderbox Vineyard and the Clarence Vineyard in the Coal River being the main source in 2021 and 2022.

These wines have been made with a deft touch - they are bright and fresh with great clarity and surprising density. The two sites are well represented in the wines with the Clarence house displaying the opulence of a warmer more protected site and Tinderbox showing the freshness and energy of older vines with tough conditions and exposure at their core.

Domaine Chanzy Mercurey 'Les Bussieres' 2021

We are pretty excited that the wines of Domaine Chanzy will be finding a permanent home in Australia. They offer some of the best value Burgundy anywhere and the quality, we feel, will only continue to get better. Recently the estate was purchased by a wealthy French family who also own Chateau Signac in the Rhone. They have injected both energy, time and cash to the already modern winery and have allowed its dynamic winemaking duo free reign. These are exciting times and Domaine Chanzy and we can't wait to see where they go from here.

Sophisticate nose of raspberry, crushed strawberry that leads with dried citrus peel and stoney, mineral notes that fleck the lifted nose. Mid-weight with lovely drive but not overblown or heavy. The minerally, flinty, palate keeps everything fresh and vibrant with a lovely purity but also a wild, untamed nature as well. Its got the best of rustic charm and purity combined with a generosity of soft red fruits. Lovely wine. Really lovely.
