Pinot Noir is often spoken about in hushed, reverential tones and for good reason. Few grapes are as transparent, as sensitive, or as capable of capturing place with such clarity. This pack is a celebration of that diversity: six wines from across the globe that highlight just how far Pinot has travelled, and how differently it can speak depending on where it’s grown.
The line-up moves from the expected to the quietly surprising, beginning with the Domaine de Bellene Côte de Nuits Villages Vieilles Vignes 2023 a classically framed Burgundy that delivers everything you want from the heartland: dark cherry fruit, savoury earth, and a fine, structured backbone. From there, we head to the New World with Pike Road by Elk Cove 2023, a generous yet finely tuned Oregon Pinot that balances plush fruit with freshness and polish, consistently overdelivering for its level. Closer to home, the Burn Cottage “Moonlight Race” 2023 from Central Otago shows why the region continues to climb; bright, energetic, and precise, with that hallmark Otago clarity and drive.
From the more unexpected corners, Grosjean Pinot Noir 2023 from the high-altitude valleys of Northeast Italy offers a lifted, almost ethereal expression—delicate red fruits, alpine herbs, and a fine, lilting structure. Germany steps in with the Shelter Spätburgunder 2023, a standout for both value and style, combining purity of fruit with a gentle savoury edge and impressive finesse. Finally, the wildcard: Heroes Anti-Hero Yeowarra Pinot Noir 2024 from the Otways, a thrilling, coastal-influenced Pinot that brings spice, energy, and a slightly wild edge, rounding out the pack with something just a little off the beaten path and a project we are super excited about.
What ties them together is not sameness, but contrast—light and shade, perfume and structure, savoury detail and pure fruit. These are wines that invite comparison, reward curiosity, and ultimately remind us why Pinot Noir remains one of the most fascinating grapes in the world.
Heroes Anti-Hero Yeowarra Pinot Noir 2024

SPECIAL VALUE - From the 1.6ha Yeowarra Hill vineyard, planted in the Otways Hinterland in 1999 and managed by Heroes. 10% whole bunches. A bright, medium-deep cherry red. This instantly invites you in with its aromas of red and black fruits, bramble, spices and herbs such as thyme and nutmeg. Medium bodied, with firm yet svelte tannins. This very well-made and extremely well-priced wine will provide plenty of enjoyment over the next at least six to eight years. (95+) PHILIP RICH, Halliday Wine Companion
Wafts of baking spices, sarsaparilla and cherry compote alert you to its greatness. With air, rosemary tones add to the alluring nose. On the palate, a finely styled array of flavours unfurl; spiced cherries, cured meats and mulch. It's bouyant, gliding across the palate with a lightness of touch, though not forsaking flavour. The tannins are silty and fine. Great value for money. (93) GABRIELLE POY, The Real Review
The Heroes Project from Western Victoria is a cool-climate wine venture based in the Otway Hinterland, built around both estate-grown wines and a broader, more exploratory range known as the “Anti-Hero” series. The estate “Heroes” wines are focused on single-site expression from their own vineyard, while the Anti-Hero range looks outward, sourcing fruit from a small group of similarly marginal, maritime-influenced sites across Western Victoria and beyond. The idea is not to dilute quality, but to interpret a wider expression of place—still within the same cool, windswept coastal context that defines the project’s identity.
The Yeowarra Pinot Noir sits within this Anti-Hero range and is one of its most expressive wines. Sourced from the Yeowarra Hill vineyard in the Otway Hinterland, it comes from a site defined by sandy clay loams over fractured rock and a long, cool ripening season. Winemaking is intentionally restrained, with wild fermentation, a portion of whole bunch, and careful oak use to keep the focus on perfume and texture rather than weight.
Burn Cottage Moonlight Race Pinot Noir 2023

Gorgeously sweet violet and wild blackberry coulis on the nose. Anise spice, lavender and wild thyme adds complexity to the youthful, mid-weight flavours which gently coat the palate, supported by light but grippy tannins. Not a blockbuster but a slow burner, it gains sweetness as it softens to notes of cinnamon and sandalwood. Elegant and poised pinot noir which is approachable now but will reward cellaring with more layered complexity. STEPHEN WONG, The Real Review
Bright and lifted aromas of strawberries, wild raspberries, citrus peel and cherries on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy tannins giving notes of blackberries, mocha, lead pencil and wet bark. Refined and pure with 5% whole-cluster. Drink or hold. (96) JAMES SUCKLING
Chicago wine importer Marquis Savage fell in love with Central Otago on what was meant to be a quick tour of the region. Falling in love meant purchasing 24 hectares in the Cromwell basin, which were subsequently planted with clones specific to soil type and in accordance with biodynamic principles. Enlisted to help in this task was Ted Lemon of Littorai, who brought with him more than three decades of practical knowledge of terroir winegrowing based on experience in Burgundy, California and Oregon.Born-and-bred Central Otago talent Claire Mullholland, formerly of Martinborough Vineyards and Amisfield, takes charge of the winemaking, realising the bright, lively, profound potential of these vineyards year in, year out.

Domaine de Bellene Beaune Blanches Fleurs 2021

This comes from two plots have been part of the Domaine since 2006 and cover 38.51 ares. They were planted in 1971 on a quality rootstock, giving them late maturity. From Les Peuillets and Hauts Jarrons
Cask sample. Mid cherry. Red berries, redcurrants. Moderate body and quite linear. There’s a roundness to the classically Pinot character of the wine that is very attractive. Clean and fresh, with ripe red fruits, soft, well-knit tannins and good length. MATTHEW HAYES
Once again there is very good volume and excellent vibrancy to the sleek and delicious medium weight flavors that display good balance on the sappy and dusty finish. This has enough development potential to reward up to a decade of cellaring. BURGHOUND
Grosjean Pinot Noir 2023

Domaine Grosjean is a family-owned estate in the high-altitude Valle d'Aosta, where viticulture is shaped by steep alpine slopes, glacial soils and some of the highest vineyards in Europe. The Grosjean family have farmed organically for decades, becoming one of the region’s reference points for sustainable, site-driven winemaking. Their work focuses on preserving the identity of indigenous varieties, with a strong emphasis on transparency, freshness and mountain-grown precision rather than ripeness or power.
The estate’s Pinot Noir is a distinctive alpine expression of the variety, sourced from cool, elevated vineyards that naturally yield small, concentrated fruit. It is typically bright and lifted, showing red cherry, wild berry and floral notes, with a subtle savoury, herbal edge that reflects the mountain environment. The palate is light to medium-bodied, with crisp acidity and fine tannins, giving a taut, energetic feel rather than richness. It’s Pinot Noir shaped by altitude—pure, elegant and defined by freshness and clarity of place.
Shelter Spatburgunder 2023

Shelter Winery, led by Hans-Bert Espe & Silke Wolf, is a small, hands-on operation in Baden, a region more commonly dominated by large co-ops. Organic farming just a few hectares, their focus is firmly on precision, vineyard detail and drinkability over power. Located just north of the Kaiserstuhl and influenced by the nearby Black Forest, they benefit from a cooler microclimate. Combined with limestone and loess soils (rather than the region's typical volcanic base), this delivers wines with lower alcohol, brighter acidity and more finesse.
Some may remember that we offered the 2022 a couple of years ago and we were absolutely stoked to be able to source German pinot that delivered such quliaty. They are often absurdly expensive so, looking at the recent release a sense of relief filled us because this looks like it has delivered once again.
Sour cherry, cranberry, mulberry, subtle smoke, light herbal edge. Bright red fruit, fine tannins, energetic acidity. There is a very linear pull to the wine that delivers pristine fruit fruit in a tension-driven, leans cool-climate style. There is peppery, mineral flourish on the finish that adds extra interest and complexity. Another great rendition here with plenty of drinkability.
Pike Road - by Elk Cove Pinot Noir 2023

Pike Road Pinot Noir is a beautifully pitched Willamette Valley expression that is bright, lifted and immediately engaging. Red cherry, raspberry and cranberry, layered with gentle spice, florals and a touch of savoury earth. The palate is supple and medium-bodied, with fresh acidity and fine, easy tannins giving it a smooth, drink-now feel, while still carrying enough detail to reflect its cool-climate origins. It’s Pinot with clarity and charm. It's generous without ever feeling heavy.
The project sits within the extended family of Elk Cove Vineyards, one of Oregon’s benchmark producers. Pike Road was established by the Campbell family as a sister label, drawing on over four decades of farming and winemaking experience in the Willamette Valley. Adam Campbell oversees the wines, working closely with a network of long-term grower partners—many of whom the family has collaborated with for generations.
Fruit is sourced from a broad spread of sites across the northern Willamette Valley, including both estate vineyards and carefully selected grower parcels spanning multiple sub-AVAs. This multi-site approach allows Pike Road to capture a complete picture of the region, while keeping the focus firmly on value delivering authentic, cool-climate Pinot Noir with the pedigree of Elk Cove, but in a more accessible, everyday style.
