Mahana

There are no dull conversations with winemaker Michael Glover. He’s now back in his homeland of Nelson, New Zealand and shaking things up as he goes. Nelson tends to sit in the wake of Marlborough, it’s easterly cousin, yet has remarkable distinction, huge potential, and a raft of potential in boutique growers. Often, Nelson sauvignon blanc becomes the Marlborough afterthought, or indeed, stretches Marlborough’s own savvys up to a 14.99% degree. Glover is at the helm of organic certified, no-expenses-spared Mahana (once was Woollaston) and its estate vineyard. There’s movement in them undulating hills.

“I don’t want a winemaker to come from the other side of the world and look at us and see us trying to be establishment” says Glover, “I don’t want us to be trying to be old world, trying to be like them. I want to show us for who we are. Show us for our ability to do what we want and to show us as authentic”. MIKE BENNIE

At Mahana we produce wine from dry-grown and organically managed vineyards that produce fruit requiring no ‘extraneous’ additions. Mahana wines show no fear of falling off the edge of the world but rather sail toward the horizon searching for treasure and adventure. This adventurous spirit fits beautifully with the spectacular four-level gravity flow design of the winery building, which is as forward-thinking as the winemaking inside. It is a custom built winery made for exploration! The winery challenges preconceived ideas as to what ‘normal’ is and where boundaries are. Mahana is at the forefront of the avant-guard of new producers in New Zealand who are rejecting the safe and ultraconservative winemaking conventions, making wines that are dynamic and thought-provoking. These are wines that dare to be different. There is an embrace of difference of quality, authenticity and the laws of terroir. Mahana wines are certified organic and vegan friendly. MAHANA WINES
