Lungarotti
Few estates are more synonymous with wine production in Umbria than
Lungarotti. In the 1960s Giogio Lungarotti - an agronomist and winemaker - put
the region on the map through his pioneering efforts in first, producing
drinkable wine and then championing the DOC recognition of Torgiano (more
latterly this has become a DOCG region). Over the intervening years the estate
has achieved great acclaim and grown in size to encompass a wide ranging
portfolio of wines at different price points and quality levels; most of which
are drawn from the family's extensive plantings around the town of Torgiano. In
more recent years the current stewards of the estate, sisters Chiara and Teresa,
have refocussed their energies back on the traditions of the area and the
essence of the estate itself by committing to sangiovese and cannaiolo through
their Rubesco reds and Trebbiano-Grechetto blends for the whites. The results
have come quickly and the current crop of wines are excellent expressions of
their varieties and provide great value.
The Rubesca Riserva is part of a
commitment to an aging program for all the riserva wines and emphasises the
depth of the quality being pursued by the new gatekeepers. Outside the Torgiano
area the family also has a smaller estate in Montelfalco where they produce
excellent quality Sagrantino. PWS
