We can't believe we haven't done this before! We were so sure we looked back through the system just to see and low and behold, we came up with doughnuts. Well, time to rectify the situation.

So, this pack celebrates what continues to be one of Australia's greatest pinot-producing regions and one that has been making work-class pinot for decades now. However, like many Australian wine regions, there was a somewhat homogonised view of the Yarra Valley that has slowly, over time, given way to an understanding that much like its European counterparts the gentle curves and winding valleys are home to a multitude of terroirs that expressed themselves, through pinot noir in particular, in a myriad of different and wonderful ways.

With that in mind, we have put together six pinots from all over the upper and lower Yarra Valley. Some are single expressions from one of the many 'villages' that patchwork the Yarra while some are single vineyards or blocks. They come from the country's most well-respected producers and winemaking stars.

This was a lot of fun to put together and in the end, represents a fantastic snapshot of Yarra Valley pinot noir today.

Izway 'Angelo' Aglianico 2021

It’s fine and focussed, still with plenty of crunchy, vibrant dark and blue-fruit laden with licorice and spice-cinnamon, clove, anise with hints of earth. There is plenty of depth here, yet the wine retains vibrancy and an energetic line along with a gentle tug of abundant, fine-grained tannins for structure. DAVE BROOKES

As Brian Conway says of making this "We did not set out to match or copy the style of the Aglianico wines of Southern Italy; they are their own unique and lovely wines. However, we did still want the wine to have an Italian feel to it and to actually look like an Aglianico." Well, a stellar job they did. It has all the lovely plush Barossa warmth infused fruit but that beautiful tannin profile that weaves its way through the wine propping everything up and giving it wonderful energy. Its all pitched nicely here with that smoked earth aglianico thing sitting confidently but quietly in the back. Very cool wine

Inkwell Perfect Day Shiraz 2019

Very good warm-climate shiraz. Blue- and black-fruit allusions, kirsch, a waft of violet, Dutch licorice, coffee-bean oak and impeccably extracted, tightly wrought grape tannins imparting tension, verve and poise. A full-weighted wine allied to a deft touch, as the heat is virtually imperceptible. NED GOODWIN MW, James Halliday

Jaboulet Crozes-Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert 2020

Shimmering ruby. Expressive, spice-accented red and dark berry aromas are complemented by suggestions of olive, espresso and candied flowers. Juicy and energetic on the palate, offering gently sweet cherry and cassis flavors that deepen through the back half. Finishes very long, spicy and smooth, with even tannins lending final grip. (92-94) JOSH RAYNOLDS, Vinous

Querciabella Turpino 2017

The 2017 Turpino is quite reticent, which is surprising given the style and personality of the year. Black cherry, pine, menthol, licorice and chocolate develop nicely over time. Readers should give the 2017 at least a few years in bottle, as it is not at all ready to drink now. The 2017 embodies the house style at Querciabella these days nicely. The wine is rich and deep, but not at all overdone. (95) ANTONIO GALLONI

40% Cabernet Franc, 40% Syrah, 20% Merlot grown in a north-facing vineyard in Grossetto in the Maremma. Biodynamically certified. Aged for 16 months in fine- and extra-fine-grained French oak barriques, of which up to 20% were new.
Lustrous deep crimson. Deep red- and dark-fruit nose with hints of dark spice. Savoury rather than sweet or ripe on the nose... Hint of earth and dried moss. Lush red and dark fruit with a muscular structure that is completely integrated with the fruit. Hedonistic, long, and with loads of appeal. Great fun to drink. (17+) WALTER SPELLER MW

Hobo Wine Camp The Hobo Wine Co Sonoma County Zinfandel 2019

A blend of Dry Creek Valley and Rockpile fruit. Aged in a mix of older French foudre and puncheons for a little bit of supportive grip.

Crawford River Musuem Release Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Lots of love and patience to make this wine.

Succulent yet deep red. Supple tannins, cool minty refrain in dark cherry, cassis, lavender, violets and liquorice going on. Smooth ride, so so satiny, lush yet controlled and finds its groove so easily. Such a delight to drink, complex fruit characters doing fruit flavours, spice, judicious seasoning, tannin, acid all so well. Really impressive and in 2018 a little extra bandwidth and generosity perhaps. Oh so delightful. Cellar long or drink now. Superb. (95) MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front
