Irrewarra

Never heard of Irrewarra? That’s ok. It would be more of a surprise if everyone had. It is the name of a small town outside Geelong in Victoria (the name translates to long spear from the traditional owners’ dialect) that has two remarkable features: One of country’s top bakeries (with the same name) and a vineyard that has been used to source fruit for the Farr family (of By Farr fame) wines for some years now.

Both of these happen to be owned by long term friend of the Prince Wine Store, John Calvert, and so it was quite exciting when the distributors of By Farr announced a new release from Nick Farr as a single vineyard Pinot and Chardonnay under the label Irrewarra. The results are sensational. This vineyard has provided the backbone for the Farr Rising wines for some years now and as a standalone site under the meticulous eye of Nick Farr they really shine in their own right. The Chardonnay is intense, smoky and powerful but with a refreshing snap. The Pinot is fruitful but also with a serious edge that has all the hallmarks of the Farr wines. In short these are both excellent and we will be watching these new releases carefully. PWS
