Ipso Facto Wines - Margaret River

1. What got you into wine?
Summer holidays down south and a curiosity about the wineries we would visit was the start, then the realisation that winemaking as a career ticked a lot of boxes – science based, yet still creative, very hands on, and then being surrounded by a great bunch of people sealed the deal!

2. Which of your wines best defines what you’re about? (Tell us why too.)
Chenin – lots going on, yet relatively straight-forward.

3. With wine, what’s next?
A shift away from big reds, more medium to light bodied, sessionable wines that we can drink year round in the Australian climate. And much more fun with wine, approachable wines and approachable winemakers taking the wines to the people.

4. What is your winemaking mantra? OR Do you have a favourite quote about wine or winemaking?
Less is more, it really is the best way to showcase the fruit.

5. What wine lesson - or winemaking lesson - did you learn the hard way?
Always keep a change of clothes in the car!

6. What are your 3 favourite wines right now? Why?
Cedric Bouchard’s Roses de Jeannne, Le Clos du Tertre Riesling and Damaine Naturaliste Syrah. All wines that rely on purity of fruit over winemaking artifact but still have elegance, structure and interest.

7. What song is the soundtrack to your life; what wine is the winetrack?
Black Fingernails, Red Wine….. every vintage! Bit awkward when you have a wedding to attend mid vintage, otherwise just part of the fun.
Chenin of course! It’s versatile like you have to be when you run your own business. And like life it can be sweet, or not; complex or quite straight-forward and sometimes it even sparkles, but always with a strong backbone driving it.
