Gaja

Angelo Gaja makes the most exciting wines in Italy. He has few equals in terms of his sheer determination and dedication to great winemaking. Years ago, Gaja transcended traditional, rustic Italian winemaking by making modern wines that appealed to sophisticated consumers around the world. Yet he preserved his wines' unique Italian character. JAMES SUCKLING

Sorì San Lorenzo is the most powerful, structured and masculine of Gaja’s three single vineyard wines from Barbaresco. Costa Russi is always about suppleness, while Sorì Tildìn speaks to finesse above all else. ANTONIO GALLONI

Lastly, it is impossible to measure the enormous influence of two wine producers, Piedmont's Angelo Gaja and Tuscany's Piero Antinori. Both men have long pursued the road less traveled - the path of quality, innovation, and courageous experimentation. They are an inspiration to all of those who care about the quality of wines we consume. ROBERT PARKER

There is no question that Gaja is the most famous winery in Italy and produces some of its finest wines. A visit there a couple of years ago filled in the gaps for me in terms of what made Angelo Gaja’s wines so unique and special in the greater context of not only Barbaresco and Piedmonte but across all of Italy, and the world. The answer was several fold, the absolutely obsessive nature of the man behind the wines, the meticulous, almost fanatical attention to detail in both the winery and vineyards, the perfectly situated plots of land used for his three iconic single vineyards and the relentless drive of the entire team to create the pinnacle wines of Italy.

Stepping in to the Gaja grounds as the huge metal gate rolls slowly open you instantly realise that this visit will be serious, everything is in its proper place, spotlessly clean and perfectly kept. Met by the engaging Gaia Gaja we were taken on a tour of the property and cellars, where the same attention to detail was obvious, finally in the tasting room where Angelo came marching in half way through the session to loudly, and confidently, explain exactly what he thought made a wine great, most definitely a presence to reckon with and his strength of conviction is as obvious in his stance and the way he speaks as it is in his wines.

We have been able to source an incredible selection of his three most important wines and they are being offered at prices cheaper than has ever been the case in Australia. This is an opportunity not to be missed by any fan of this legendary estate, or in fact by anyone who appreciates truly magical wine. ROSCOE
