Gaia

Peloponnese and Santorini
Gai'a has established itself as one of Greece's gold standard wineries. Unlike the majority of them, though, it is double trouble-making exceptional whites on Santorini as well as some of the country's best Agiorgitiko in Nemea. MARK SQUIRES

Gaia Wines resulted from a partnership between Agronomist Leon Karatsolas and one of Greece's leading wine figures, Yiannis Paraskevopoulos. The duo began their venture in Santorini in 1994, producing a thousand cases of modern, clean OPAP Santorini white. Having met with immediate success, the pair built a state of the art winery in Koutsi, Upper Nemea in 1997. While they still produce superior Santorini, Agiorgitiko is currently their leading card. A proposed super appellation for Upper Nemea would put their vineyards in the most coveted zone in the country. Now, with several vintages of one of Greece's most highly-rated red wines under their belts, Gaia now produces 30,000 cases per year. GREEK WINEMAKERS.COM
