Fontodi
There is little doubt Giovanni Manetti is at the top of his game. After tasting these wines from bottle along with multiple barrel samples, my impression is that Manetti continues to make small but important changes that are moving his wines towards a style that emphasizes finesse over sheer power. For years Fontodi have been one of my absolute favourite Italian producers and while one might expect a slackening of performance they only seem to get better as time goes on. After meeting the owner, Giovanni Manetti, for the first time last year it is easy to see why; he's very low key and self-effacing and still very connected to the path of the vineyards and the wine style.
Of course the wines also come from some of the most hallowed ground in the Chianti Classic sub-zone in Panzano where they benefit from their situation in the heart of the famed Conca d'Oro ampitheatre. MICHAEL MCNAMARA
