Ferdinando Principiano

In 1993 Ferdinando Principiano returned from oenology school in Alba to help his father on their small estate. Apart from his studies, he had also completed short apprenticeships with Robert Conterno and Roberto Voerzio; the best of both stylistic worlds. His initial wines erred on the modern side an perhaps too much so with generously extracted wines with good licks of newer oak dominating the style.

This all changed when Ferdinando realised he wasn't drinking his own wines and with that started to wind back the amount of oak and the use of rotofermenters and in their place started to concentrate on vineyard health, and a less extractive regime, oak-soaked style. The wines are the unequivocal winner here and the style now has a foot in both camps; modern classic if you like. PWS
