Most of the family's vineyards sit at what would be considered very high altitude elsewhere (above 500 meters) on soils with prevailing combination of sand and silt, which seems to bring out distinct aromatic profiles in the wines. In any modern appraisal of the great producers of Valtellina then the wines of Sandro Fay are usually placed at or near the top of the quality tree. Located almost entirely in the Valgella district at the eastern end of the string of five distinct districts, the Fay vineyards are spread fromapproximately 300 metres up to 850-900. Sandro has now passed the winemaking to his son Marco and daughter Elena is in charge of sales and marketing.
There are several wines in the arnge but most significant is the entry Valtellina Superiore Costa Bassa DOCG and then the single-vineyard wines from La Faya and Carteria. Like most of the best producers, Fay believes the best vineayrds lies between 500-600 metres elevation.
