E.Pira & Figli Barolo Lunch with Beatrice Boschis

Year in, year out Chiara Boschis quietly makes some of the most compelling wines in Barolo with out getting the attention or recognition of some of her neighbors. ANTONIO GALLONI

Today, E. Pira & Figli is regarded as one of the benchmark producers of Barolo, crafting wines that combine the power and longevity of Nebbiolo with an uncommon degree of elegance, perfume, and accessibility. With the passing of legendary Luigi “Gigi” Pira in the early 80’s, the estate passed to close friends of Gigi, the Bochis family. Less than a decade later, it would be Chiara Bochis who would take the reigns ushering in a new era of greatness for the estate and cementing Chiara as one of the region's most celebrated winemakers.

She became one of the first women to lead a Barolo estate and was the only woman associated with the influential group of producers later dubbed the "Barolo Boys the generation that helped revolutionise the region during the 1980s and 1990s. Through shorter fermentations, gentler extraction, and more precise élevage, she helped create a style that retained Barolo's structure but delivered greater finesse and earlier approachability, expressing Nebbiolo’s complexity through detailed management both in the vineyard and winery.

The winery sits in a fascinating middle ground between traditionalism and modernism. Their focus still remains in the vineyard with manual harvesting, tightly controlled yields, and organic viticulture, the estate one of the first to be certified in Barolo. In the winery, its temperature-controlled steel tanks and a combo of botti and French oak that deliver Barolo of intensity, clarity, refinement, and balance.

Today, while Chiara is still the central figure at E.Pira, she is joined by her niece Beatrice. She represents a new generation that has inherited not only some of Barolo's most coveted vineyards but also the responsibility of maintaining the standards and vision established by Chiara and the generations before her. Its an exciting chapter for the estate where knowledge, vineyard stewardship, and winemaking philosophy are passed directly from one generation to the next.
