Dutton Goldfield
Dutton-Goldfield Winery was founded in 1998 by longtime colleagues and friends Steve Dutton and Dan Goldfield, with the latter serving as winemaker. Dutton Ranch is a collection of over 60 non-contiguous parcels in Russian River Valley that comprise approximately 1,300 acres of land that they own, lease or manage. About 1,150 of these acres are planted to grapes. BURGHOUND
Dutton Goldfield continue to turn out excellent quality pinot noir and chardonnay from the multitude of vineyards sites in the cooler reaches of the Russian River valley; most notably from the Green Valley sub-zone. Our recent trip again highlighted the intrinsic quality of the wines, particularly at the mid-price-point for chardonnay and pinot noir. No doubt the access to superb quality fruit from a variety of sites coupled with Goldfield's obvious talent and penchant for wines with lower alcohols and crystalline structure makes them very appealing.
Our most recent tasting took in a large selection of their range, revolving mostly around the excellent 2014 vintage. All the wines looked excellent but we were once again (as in previous years) struck by the sheer quality of the "basic" Dutton Ranch chardonnay and pinot noir offerings. There's no doubt the wines hold a good amount of up-front flavour but its the addition of structural elements which keeps the wines "on their toes" with good acidity helping to balance the more boisterous elements of the style. The other thing about the two wines is that they're delicious, and I mean this in the most simplistic way; they are just plain enjoyable to drink. PWS
