Domaine Guillard
Domaine Guillard is definitely under the radar. The owner, Michel does not own a computer. He does not have a cellar door and rarely opens his door, that is if you manage to find his winery. He has a fax machine, but admits with a grin that he often does not put paper in it. Tom found the domaine by accident in 1992 when he did his first vintage in Burgundy and we have been going back regularly since. Sometimes we are lucky enough to find Michel in his cellar and have managed to buy some wine, sometimes not. After many years of buying his wines, we managed to convince Mr Guillard to let us import a few bottles in Australia. TOM CARSON
These are the kind of gems that you really have to go looking for in Burgundy today where virtually every domaine with decent holdings is putting as much attention in to marketing their wines abroad as they are in the winery and vineyards. We were first exposed to them some years back by wine maker and Aussie wine figure Tom Carson and have been buying them every year since. These are old school in the most beautiful way. Guillard’s wines are fragrant, attractive, fruitful and always a joy to drink. In many ways they remind me of Raphet’s wines for their open and generous nature but perhaps Guillard has a little more fruit intensity through the core.
While these really are lovely, especially in 2016, what is perhaps the most exciting part is that they remain relatively inexpensive. They really shine in the glass but perhaps more so on the dinner table. It is another great bracket from Guillard this year. ROSCOE
