Daniel Bouland Beaujolais 22'

Daniel Bouland is one of the very finest producers in the commune of Villié-Morgon. There may be producers in this village that are more famous than Monsieur Bouland, but to my palate, there are none here who make superior wines. JOHN GILMAN, View From the Cellar

This estate is one of my personal reference points for Beaujolais. Concentrated and succulent, Bouland's wines are beautifully differentiated by site and age gracefully… WILLIAM KELLEY, wineadvocate.com

Always a personal favourite where I plan to buy some wine yet hardly ever get the chance to return before my three-week tour is finished… BILL NANSON, burgundyreport.com

Even Bouland himself struggled to find fault in his wines from what is an outstanding vintage for Beaujolais. “I’m not complaining,” he told us—a phrase you will not often hear from this notoriously self-critical grower. The main takeaway from the year is how fresh and racy the wines are, considering the vintage could be summarised as hot and dry. Unlike 2020, when the lack of water resulted in thick skins, little juice and deep, structured wines, 2022 was completely different. Although an August harvest once again, alcohol levels are lower than in 2020, and the fruit is more vibrant and balanced. The only clue to the nature of the year is how irresistible the wines already are. JASPER MORRIS MW, insideburgundy.com

The bucolic hills of Beaujolais are inundated with friendly farmers, many of who prize hard work in the vineyard over spraying excessive amounts of chemicals. These wines are loaded with delight, but there’s also complexity and detail which reminds you of its cousins further up the slope in Cote d’Or.

The wines of Daniel Bouland are an anomaly in the warm and dry 2022 vintage. As Jasper Morris MW notes. ‘The main takeaway from the year is how fresh and racy the wines are… alcohol levels are lower than in 2020, and the fruit is more vibrant and balanced. The only clue to the nature of the year is how irresistible the wines already are.’

This is a reference point estate in Beaujolais, William Kelley serves high praise on the wines, ‘Concentrated and succulent, Bouland's wines are beautifully differentiated by site and age gracefully.’ They are a constant in many wine critics cellars – and a favourite amongst our staff!

If you like the wines of Thivin and Foillard, you’ll love these. They’re free from faults and packed with nuance and energy. Working with the superior Beaujolais Crus on granite and schist soils, his cuvees all speak of their individuality through subtle differences in their composures and expressions.

Bouland toils away in his very old gnarled gobelet vines in the crus of Morgon, Chiroubles and Côte de Brouilly.  There is something about their fleshy ebullient natures that brings great pleasure and lures you back. Across the board, the wines burst with flavour and fine architecture to ensure they’ll age well.

In the winery, all the fruit is fermented with whole bunches and wild yeasts and old oak are employed. All these efforts make sure the fruit is the heart of each wine, while whole bunches add a finely sculpted tannin thread throughout.

They offer nuance and a sense of place for $50 each in straight six-pack buys. Fill your cellar with these, these joyful wines offer great value for money - you won’t regret buying them.

Cheers
