Giuseppe Fortunato is Nature’s caretaker in a land of concrete, illegal property and earth shakes – the town of Pozzuoli, which is only 15 km West of Naples and is practically being englobed within Campania’s capital city, lies on one of the world’s most densely populated active volcanic areas, the Campi Flegrei. This man is both a vinekeeper (some plantings are pre-phylloxera and some of the vines are still on their own roots) and a beekeeper (you can see it from his wine labels!), thus he is a true interpreter of terroir. The falanghina has got freshness, tension, acidity, vibrancy and minerality (volcanic soil helps, as usual), while piedirosso – locally named “per’ ’e palummo”, that is “dove’s foot” due to the red colouring of the stems – is spicy, herbaceous, crisp, profound and somehow austere.
