CHENIN GLOBAL

Saturday 20th June 12 pm - 2pm

Chenin Blanc is a remarkably versatile white wine variety, prized for its ability to deliver both character and complexity across a wide spectrum of styles. Originating in France’s Loire Valley, it is celebrated for its classic aromatic profile of white flowers, crisp apple, quince, and honeysuckle, often underpinned by a distinctive note of beeswax as it ages. Naturally high in acidity, Chenin Blanc has an exceptional capacity for longevity, making it as compelling in youth as it is with extended bottle development. Often described as the great “chameleon” grape, it can express itself in an extraordinary range of styles. From bone-dry and off-dry to sparkling and lusciously sweet adapting seamlessly to different climates, soils, and winemaking approaches.

Much like its more widely recognised French counterpart, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc has achieved global success beyond its historic homeland. In South Africa’s Western Cape, it has become one of the country’s most important fine wine exports, where it is commonly referred to as “Steen.” Regions such as Stellenbosch and Swartland, characterised by rugged terrains and diverse soil types, produce wines of impressive texture and depth. Old vine plantings, in particular, have elevated Chenin Blanc to new heights here, showcasing both richness and precision, often with a distinctive mineral edge.

In Australia, Chenin Blanc offers a different perspective, tending towards brighter, more citrus-driven expressions. The maritime influence of Margaret River in Western Australia yields wines with vibrant acidity and saline freshness, while in McLaren Vale, plantings in sandy soils contribute to a softer, more textural style with ripe fruit character. Though still somewhat under the radar locally, Chenin Blanc is steadily gaining recognition for its adaptability and its affinity with modern Australian cuisine.

Despite its global reach, the Loire Valley remains Chenin Blanc’s spiritual home and benchmark. Here, centuries-old vineyards across appellations such as Anjou, Saumur, Vouvray, and Montlouis-sur-Loire continue to produce some of the world’s most profound examples. From crystalline dry wines to age-worthy sweet bottlings shaped by noble rot, the Loire showcases the full spectrum of what Chenin Blanc can achieve, often with a remarkable interplay of fruit, acidity, and minerality.

Chenin Global is a celebration of these diverse expressions. an exploration of terroir, tradition, and innovation. By bringing together outstanding examples from the Loire Valley and leading international regions, it highlights the breadth and adaptability of Chenin Blanc, offering a comprehensive look at one of the wine world’s most dynamic and compelling grape varieties.
