Cigliuti Campass Barbera 2017 (2 bottles)
A real stand out, the 2017 Barbera d'Alba Campass is laced with the essence of blue and purplish fruit, spice, dried herbs, licorice, lavender and menthol. Unctuous and rich in feel, the 2017 has so much to offer. Like the Serraboella Barbera, the Campass is a bit slender relative to the norm, but there are no hard edges. This is such a pretty wine. ANTONIO GALLONI
Marchesi Alfieri La Tota Barbera d'Asti 2017 (2 bottles)
If you're anywhere in Piemonte and ask who makes the best Barbera, then the name Marchesi Alfieri is invariably mentioned in the first few. This remarkable estate at San Martino Alfieri is dedicated to Barbera and over the years they have accumulated a a swag of tre bicchieri awards to prove it.
La Tota is the core of production and the 2017 is another brilliant example. Red cherry and cake spices meet blue florals on the nose. Opens with raspberry and cherry and lovely mouth perfume of violets. Plush and rich but beautifully aligned by the buffering acidity. A text book example from the masters of the craft. Delicious. MICHAEL MCNAMARA, PWS
Gianfranco Alessandria Barbera d'Alba 2018 (2 bottles)
Alessandria is one of the better small producers of Barolo based in the commune of Monforte d'Alba. A few years ago we widened the offering from the estate to include this Barbera. Why? Because it is so damn good and superb value for money. Rich, plush, dark cherry and vanillin spice cohabit on both nose and palate with moderate tannin pull coming from judicious wood ageing cleaning up the back end. Like all their wines, this Barbera speaks softly but carries a big quality stick. One of the best value Barberas in the market. MICHAEL MCNAMARA, PWS
