Archangel
Archangel is a relative newcomer to the ranks of Central Otago producers but one that we think has the potential to become one of the more interesting additions over the course of time.
Located in the Queensberry sub-zone in the Upper Clutha valley, the vineyard was first planted in 2003 to a variety of mix of varieties with a particular focus on pinot noir. Sitting, clones and planting densities were all determined with the assistance of Felton Road owner, Nigel Greening, and his team led by Blair Walter. In all there are 14 individual blocks, each harvested and fermented separately with the aim being to understand what each clone and site is contributing to the final blend. The first release was the 2008 and even then it was clear to see the wine pinot noir had a depth of typically vibrant fruit "Central" fruit but also had underling structure and elegance others lacked. The pinot has been joined by an excellent Germanic-style Riesling, a Pinot Gris and a second label value pinot called Long Trek.
On the winemaking side, noted NZ consultant John Belsham oversees the style
along with owner, Mary Zurakowski and the leverage is then handled by Dan Dineen
