Anita & Hans Nittnaus

“John” Nittnaus is one of the visionaries of Austria's red wine revolution, and the original source of the idea for the Pannobile group of leading regional vintners as well as the white and red blends bottled under this name. Nittnaus took the reins of the family winery in 1985 and has steadily expanded the domain's holdings to 25 hectares. In recent years, Nittnaus has devoted his most passionate attention to his vineyards on the west side of Lake Neusiedl at the foot of the Leitha mountains; these calcareous and slate soils offer completely different terroir than his vineyards in Gols, on the other side of the lake. “Leithaberg” is the name Nittnaus uses for the best white and red wine from these vineyards. Martin Nittnaus studied art and literature before returning to the estate of his parents, Anita and Hans, who have managed the family property since 1986. Much has changed in that time. Martin's grandfather made only white wines, but today the estate's 26 hectares of vineyards scattered over 15 sites are almost all red. Since 2009 they are certified biodynamic. JOEL B. PAYNE
