Alpha Box & Dice
Alpha Box & Dice Winery in McLaren Vale looks like it could be straight out of Fitzroy North in Melbourne. A grungy looking spray painted exterior bearing their name gives way to a funky interior. Quite frankly it is a hipsters oasis and beards and hairstyles are plentiful. Small batch, wine with soul, minimal intervention. These are not new mantras in this industry and my pessimism is compounded when I see how sharp the packaging is. I try and wine and my pessimism turns to admiration.
Alpha Box & Dice is the brainchild of founding winemaker Justin Lane. Having worked and travelled across Europe he returned to McLaren Vale to create an ‘alphabet of wine’. Creating every wine holistically, all have their own personalities with the main aim being to produce delicious wines. Dabbling in every variety from Aglianico to Zibibbo, we were particularly impressed with the letters S and T. Siren 2014 is made from Nero D’Avola and is one of the most striking wine labels you will ever see (designed by Mambo surf clothing brand). Tarot 2015 is made from Grenache with a little carbonic maceration, and is one of the most inviting wines I have tried this year. We are delighted to have found this producer and we think you will love their wines. PWS
