On the subject of terroir, there is no doubt that Château Coutet has some of the best. One could argue that it was not until the 1989 vintage that the Baly's first replicated the glory years of old. However, since then there has been a string of great Coutets NEAL MARTIN
2021 SAUTERNES VINTAGE
Sauternes ‘utterly brilliant’ but tiny quantities. For, both miraculously and yet even more poignantly in a way, the wines themselves – where there is one – are utterly brilliant. They have been produced in incredibly tiny quantities, but they are in their way undoubtedly the wines of this vintage. COLIN HAY, Drinks Business
Extremely high quality and pathetically low quantity JANCIS ROBINSON MW
While the undisputed heavy weight of Sauternes must be d’Yquem, its perennial overachiever is, in my not so humble opinion, Coutet.
I have written about Coutet so often over the years that I think there is very little I can say that would be new. So, let me just cut to the chase. Look at the reviews, look at the prices, consider the range of excellent vintages on offer and tell me this isnt too good an opportunity to pass up.
This is a line I copied direct from a previous offer I wrote, that should sum up my feelings. “Coutet has long been my go to Sauternes (d’Yquem when someone else is paying) and I love it for its luxuriant, heady appeal and that tell tale Coutet zip.”
I love the fact that it leans in to the richness and depth of flavour that its vineyards can yield but they also hold that tension, that crisp bite to the fruit which brings the all too important freshness and cleans up the hugely unctuous palate weight that comes from good years of Coutet. You never feel like your palate has been inundated, Coutet is never cloying, despite all that sweetness, instead its lively and finishes clean with tonnes of brightness and personality.
There are a lot of sweet wines that cost a lot more than Coutet and don’t live up to this grand estates stellar record of quality and their ability to develop so beautifully in the cellar.
As I mentioned in the title, if you order now we will do our very best to get you these wines before Christmas. No promises this late in the game, but we will do all we can to make it happen.
