Andre Clouet Silver Brut NV 1500ml
Jean-Francois Clouet's zero-dosage ideal is realised with magnificent clarity here. Such is the concentration and richness of his pinot noir that it has absolutely no need for any sweetness. The bouquet is delightfully fresh, lifted, pure and expressive, with lemon zest, yellow mirabelle plums and red apple fruits. The palate follows impeccably, showcasing the concentration of Bouzy with exceptional purity and focus. Its barrel work blends impeccably contributing nuances of nougat, brioche and honey. Succulent yellow summer fruits pull seamlessly into a crunchy finish of red apple and lemon zest, concluding long and refined, with refreshingly taut acidity and soft, chalky minerality. Classic Bouzy of the finest order. TYSON STELZER, The Champagne Guide
Light yellow-gold. A highly aromatic nose displays lemon zest, fig, pear and ginger, with a bright mineral overtone. Tangy and precise, offering a complex blend of lime, white flowers, quinine and dusty minerals. Juicy, tightly focused Champagne, with nervy acidity adding cut to a long, sappy finish. This wine reminded me a lot of an old-school Chablis. JOSH RAYNOLDS
The NV Brut Nature Silver is naturally a very focused, driven wine given the no-dosage style. This shows wonderful nuance and depth all the way through to the long finish, with bright aromas and flavors but less of the toastiness than some of the house's other wines. The mousse and finish are both utterly impeccable in their elegance. ANTONIO GALLONI
Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay 2023 1500ml
If you have never tried these wines, then it is time you see for yourself what New Zealand is capable of. NEAL MARTIN
If you can taste history, duty, and family pride in a glass, it's there in the Kumeu River Chardonnays. LISA PEROTTI-BROWN, The Wine Advocate
Kumeu River has long been the spearhead for New Zealand Chardonnay. REBECCA GIBB, Vinous.com
This is fresh, crunchy and clean, with mineral and spice notes and plenty of salty undertones. Sliced lemons and apples. Medium-bodied with a fresh finish. Drink now. Screw cap. JAMES SUCKLING
The Brajkovichs remain firmly on top when it comes to New Zealand Chardonnay, finding another gear over the last decade as the competition around them heats up. They are undoubtedly New Zealand's greatest white wine producer and have set a blistering pace for the variety over the last four decades.
Yes, this small family winery that's sandwiched between a winding river and a busy highway is a world beater. Collectors from the across the world are eager to snap up their wares upon release. Pulling off the highway just beyond the outskirts of Auckland and stepping through the lemon-yellow archway that leads into the tasting room it all seems a bit impossible. Maybe better suited to a few souvenirs, tea and scones perhaps? Then you taste the wines.
Nocturne SR Rose 2023 1500ml
SPECIAL VALUE
A blush of pinky orange, it’s zesty, bright and moreish from the first to the last sip. Expect a dash of red fruits, spice, licorice, red of course and a touch of pomegranate molasses without the sweetness, just the intense flavours, which cruise along this rippin’ rosé. The tempranillo, comprising 7% of the blend, is whole-bunch pressed to old oak puncheons, which adds to the texture, a slip of creamy lees to bolster the palate. A delicious rosé. (95) JANE FAULKNER, Halliday Wine Companion
Nocturne is a serious now not so new-ish venture spearheaded by Julian Langworthy producing a range of single vineyard and sub-regional wines from exceptional sites in Margaret River. This is the region Julian grew up in and where he has transformed Deep Woods Estate since becoming chief winemaker in 2011. In the process he has won just about every prize imaginable, including the 2016 Jimmy Watson for his Reserve Cabernet on his way to becoming James Halliday’s 2019 Winemaker of the Year. Impressive stuff.
Querciabella Chianti Classico 2021 1500ml
The 2021 Chianti Classico is fabulous. Bright and punchy, with terrific resonance, this wine shows just how compelling the vintage is. Readers will find a Chianti Classico of dynamic energy and volume. Dark red cherry, purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal, spice and a gentle kiss of French oak build into the sumptuous, vibrant finish. Superb. The 2021 was aged in 500-liter barrels (5-6% new) for 14 months and is a blend of fruit from Greve, Gaiole and Radda. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous
This has a fresh character with ripe cherries and raspberries as well as dried flowers, bark and stones. Polished and textural with a medium body and vivid acidity. Focused and fresh with chalky tannin structure and a linear finish with notes of citrus and minerals. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. JAMES SUCKLING
A saturated purple/magenta hue, the 2021 Chianti Classico is lush and fresh with aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, violet, and fresh leather. Plush and inviting, with bright acidity along the sides of the palate shining through, it offers a velvety texture with a long finish. It’s polished but not oaky and has a very refined feel, with medium to full body and a long and balanced finish. Drink 2026-2040. JEB DUNNUCK
This red is precise, offering cherry, raspberry, rose, iron and tobacco flavors fused to a steely, dense and vibrant structure. Balanced and intense, building to a long aftertaste infused with fruit and mineral notes. Best from 2026 through 2045. BRUCE SANDERSON, Wine Spectator
Domaine Chermette Beaujolais Fleurie Poncie 2022 1500ml
From pink granite, 45-year-old vines, whole bunch. Rose perfume and orange blossom in the opening act. Is it a cliché that Fleurie smells floral? Don’t even get me started on ‘feminine’. But it does. And there’s also a pink grapefruit twist lingering high, acidity is something of a highlight here, following that grapefruit theme, the whole palate is lifted and ethereal. Granitic dust of tannins on a bitter wave, meaty finish with a lingering cherry. Very good. (94) KASIA SOBIESIAK, The Wine Front
This Fleurie has oomph and stamina. Deep purple in color, the wine has a nose of black raspberry, black plum and dried red cherry. Concentrated black fruit reveals itself on the midpalate followed by a sprinkling of red fruit. Drink now, but it will continue to improve with age through 2028. WINE ENTHUSIAST
Torbreck Steading GSM 2022 1500ml
The 2022 The Steading is juicy, fleshy and aromatically abundant. It is routinely a reliably satisfying wine, and it has been ever since I started drinking wine. Framed by this fine, fresh, late vintage, the Steading looks better than ever, with raspberry, licorice, mulberry, star anise and a hint of aniseed. Super! 15% alcohol, sealed under natural cork and wax. (94+) ERIN LARKIN, The Wine Advocate
In 2022, the Steading blend is 50/31/19% grenache/shiraz/mataro and is the picture of the contemporary Barossan GSM. Red and blue fruits predominately, with a flash of blueberry and cranberry providing the high tones. Plenty of detail and delineation, the gingery spiced grenache and meaty-edged mataro clearly visible and simpatico with the shiraz fruit tones. There's some pith to the fine, sandy tannins and a mineral sapidity to its savoury endpoint. Great drinking. Consistently. (94) DAVE BROOKES, Halliday Wine Companion
Plum and fresh meaty aromas, spicy/earthy background, some grenache florals peeping through; medium-full bodied and a soft fleshy tannin texture. Very pleasing and drinks well already. HUON HOOKE, The Real Review
