  3. DuMol Estate Vineyard Chardonnay Sonoma Coast 2022
DuMol Estate Vineyard Chardonnay Sonoma Coast 2022

From a site surrounded by dense forest on two sides, the 2022 Chardonnay DuMOL Estate Vineyard is a bright straw hue and has a more vibrant aromatic nose of fresh mint, bright lime, flint, crushed stones, and white peach. Medium to full-bodied, it boasts a remarkably firm structure with a bit of tannin, a chalky texture, and a savory slanting profile, and it's long and persistent on the finish. It has an assertive but crystalline feel and a crunchy brightness. It demands a bit of time (96) JEB DUNNUCK

Fresh aromas of sage, thyme, lemon curd and green apples. Medium-bodied with balance and verve. It's minerally at the end with refinement, balance and al dente fruit. A gorgeous and transparent wine. (96) JAMES SUCKLING

The 2022 Chardonnay DuMOL Estate Vineyard is a heady, extroverted wine. Orchard fruit, tangerine peel, spice, mint, baked apple tart and strong floral overtones soar from the glass. This mid-weight, dynamic Chardonnay is long on energy and complexity. Aeration brings out lovely textural resonance. (95) ANTONIO GALLONI

DuMol Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 2022

From the estate's top vineyard, planted with 100% Calera clone in more clay soil, the 2022 Pinot Noir DuMOL Estate Vineyard boasts a ripe ruby color and classic aromas of pure cherries, candied roses, sweet Asian spices, and sweet sap. Medium-bodied, it's elegant and refined on the palate, with a silky texture, an approachable feel, and a fresh, clean, soft, stony finish. (96) JEB DUNNUCK

Rather flamboyant, with ripe strawberry and iron notes and iodine undertones. Full and flavorful, yet with framed and polished gorgeous fruit and hints of strawberry tart and pie crust at the end. What you would expect of a top Russian River pinot. Calera clone with a touch of Swan. (95) JAMES SUCKLING

DuMol FINN Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 2022

PLEASE NOTE THAT FINN CAN NOT BE PURCHASED WITHOUT SIGNIFICANT SUPPORT ACROSS THE OTHER WINES
A very pinpointed pinot with crushed stone, blueberry, raspberry and strawberry aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied and very reserved, with a linear intensity and great length. Tight focus at the end with dark berries and plums. Excellent potential (97) JAMES SUCKLING

Sixty percent of the 2022 Pinot Noir Finn comes from the Bressay Vineyard with Calera selection and the rest from old vines on Occidental Road, with unknown plant material (planted with eight or so clones) that they pick all at one time, which adds a lot of complexity to this wine. It opens to complex and layered aromas of kirsch, fresh violets, sweet tobacco, and mossy earth, followed on the palate by a complete wine with velvety tannins and harmonious acidity, everything coming together seamlessly. A stunning wine, it's one of the best wines of the vintage. It's going to be hard to hold in the cellar, but it will be worth it (100) JEB DUNNUCK

From the famous cru, this parcel was replanted in 2011 and we're just beginning to see its brilliance.
Pale ruby and a heady, rather captivating nose. Sweet start and very winning even if quite different from, and much more sweetly juicy than, the Barolo norm. Even slightly brawny. WALTER SPELLER, jancisrobinson.com

The 2019 Barolo Ginestra Vigna Sorì Ginestra is one of the most elegant wines I have ever tasted from Conterno-Fantino and the Ginestra cru. Ample and broad, with huge intensity, the Sorì Ginestra is stunning. All the Ginestra signatures come through in the glass. The 2019 is deep and vibrant, yet also wonderfully fresh. Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric del Fiasc 2019
The compelling 2019 Barolo Bric del Fiasc from Paolo Scavino is drop-dead gorgeous. Opening with heady scents of Alpine herb, iris, dark spice and perfumed berry, it showcases the magnificent site, the fantastic vintage and the generational experience of the Scavino family. Stunningly delicious and radiant, it delivers ripe red cherry, raspberry compote, blood orange and licorice set against firm, fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity. 10. Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne 2019
Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne 2019
The 2019 Barolo Le Vigne is pure and total seduction. Kirsch, sweet pipe tobacco, mint, cedar, dried herbs and orange peel all grace a Le Vigne built on mid-weight structure and energy. There is a feeling of youthful classicism and austerity that is so beguiling. Readers should plan on being patient, though. The 2019 won't be ready to drink anytime soon, but there is enough fruit to make me think it will be superb, in time. (94) ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

Very aromatic with hibiscus, crab apple, orange blossom, and ripe strawberry on the nose. Full-bodied, very layered and powerful, yet it remains very fine textured with an intense finish. Slightly more structured than before. Perhaps due to the addition of wines from a new vineyard? Try after 2027. (97) JAMES SUCKLING

A blend of several small parcels of vines from several communes, Le Vigne is Sandrone's ode to the classic, Barolo-wide blend that was once the norm. All the sites that contribute to Le Vigne are markedly different in terms of altitude, soil and exposure, and together provide a broad overview of Barolo in a given year. 2019 is the first year to include Nebbiolo from Sandrone's new holding in Le Coste di Monforte in Monforte d'Alba, a site Sandrone had been farming since 2000. So, from this vintage, Le Vigne includes fruit from Barolo, Serralunga d'Alba, Novello, Castiglione Falletto and Monforte d'Alba. Regarding the winemaking, wild yeast fermentation begins in tank before the malolactic conversion and aging in mostly used, 500-litre French oak casks. Approximately 20-30% of the fruit is fermented as bunches, with the destemmed portion having a very high percentage of whole berries. Time on skins varied from ten days to up to one month. Total time in oak was 20-22 months and the wine was, as always, bottled unfiltered.

Domaine de Bellene Beaune Greves 1er 2021

Vines planted in 1904. Mid slope on shallow soils. Cask sample.
Mid-deep ruby. Raspberry, cassis and small black berries. Concentrated and rich, lovely texture. Woven silk. www.jancisrobinson.com

There is very good color to the exuberantly floral-suffused nose, in particular violet, that is comprised mostly by notes of black cherry and earth that are trimmed in discreet wood influence. There is excellent density and vibrancy to the bigger bodied flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the dusty and bitter chocolate-inflected finish. This well-made effort is very much built to age and I would recommend not touching a bottle for at least 7 to 8 years. (Outstanding) BURGHOUND

The 2020 Barolo Mosconi is a powerful, savory wine. Black cherry, gravel, incense, menthol and licorice all build in this virile, strapping Monforte Barolo. Ample and authoritative, the 2020 has a ton to offer. Savory herbs, earthiness and strong mineral notes infuse the substantial finish. Superb. (95) ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

The E. Pira e Figli - Chiara Boschis 2020 Barolo Mosconi has some of the extra ripeness of the vintage with cherry cream syrup, grenadine, watermelon candy and a drop of Pastis. The wine ends on a powerful note with a balanced combination of fruit and fine oak tannins. The palate is very alive, and the fruit feels very vibrant at this young stage. The 2020 Barolo Ginestra Casa Matè is gorgeous. Aromatically captivating and nuanced, the 2020 impresses right out of the gate. All the classic Ginestra signatures are present. Today the tannins are pretty imposing in the positive sense, as they are present, but also impeccably balanced within the wine's frame. This is impressive stuff. The substantial, balsamic-infused Ginestra finish is captivating. (96) ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

Elio Grasso Barolo Vigna Gavarini Chiniera 2020
The 2020 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera is a heady, almost exotic wine. Harvest took place on October 17, very late for the year. Hard candy, kirsch, menthol, dried rose petal, mint and blood orange infuse the 2020 with striking depth. The tannins, often incisive here, are remarkably polished. A wine of beautiful nuance and persistence, the 2020 Gavarini is not the most obvious wine in this range, but it could very well be the classiest. Don't miss it! (97) ANTONIO GALLONI

Step up again here. While Chaignots is in Nuits St Georges, it hugs the boundary of Vosne Romanee and so much of this wine presents the best of both those communes. Turned earth, background wood and red into blue fruits vie frame a lovely opening aromatic. The palate is rich and supple but there's also a lively vein running through it making  stand up across the palate - suppleness and energy a great combination. Lingering fine, silty tannins draw a boundary around the red fruit and wood spice. It's full of life this wine. Great drinking but also there's loads of background structure tucked in behind the fruit to make it an excellent cellaring proposition. MICHAEL MCNAMARA, PWS

  30. Vilmart Coeur de Cuvee 2015
    Vilmart Coeur de Cuvee 2015
80% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Noir from vines averaging 60 years old, the wine spends nearly 6 years on lees. Most importantly only the heart of the pressing is taken - 1400 litres instead of the usual 2100 litres, hence the name 'coeur de cuvee.'
The 2015 Brut Coeur de Cuvée is a pretty dense wine that belies its deceptively mid-weight structure. What surprises me most about the 2015 is how closed it is. In most years, especially warm years, Coeur de Cuvée is quite a bit more open and voluptuous, but the 2015 does not come across like that at all. Rather, it is super-classic in bearing, with tons of gravitas from the 60-year-old vines just waiting to emerge. There are none of the awkward herbal notes that penalize so many wines. Bright saline notes extend the finish effortlessly. The 2015 is a brilliant Coeur de Cuvée. ANTONIO GALLONI

A more elegant, and more floral-suffused, nose reflects notes of red berry fruit compote that is certainly ripe but stops short of being jammy. There is a more refined texture to the middleweight flavors thanks to the relatively fine-grained tannins shaping the balanced and lingering finale. Vilmart Coeur de Cuvee 2016
The 2016 Brut Coeur de Cuvée is an elegant, sensual Champagne. In other words, classic Vilmart. Crushed flowers, mint, chalk, slate, dried herbs and citrus peel are all beautifully delineated. Brisk acids wrap it all together in style. The 2016 needs a few years to be at its most expressive, as it is pretty reserved today. Even so, all the elements are impeccably put together. The barrels used here are one to three years old. Dosage is 7 grams per liter. Disgorged: September, 2022. (94+) ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

Notes of honeysuckle and lime blossoms, blood orange peel, anise and cardamom are a fragrant overtone heralding this fresh Champagne, which shows good tension and drive. The refined, chalky mousse is lacy in texture, buoying finely meshed flavors of ripe apricot and quince paste, raw almond, vanilla wafer and candied ginger. Ends with a long, mouthwatering finish. The 2019 Barolo EnPiasì is a tiny bottling of just 150 magnums, done with hand destemmed fruit. Jean-Luc Burguet Gevrey Chambertin Les Champeaux 1er 2021

Champeaux is their prized vineyard with the same east-facing exposure as Clos St Jacques (which sits just 50m away).
The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Champeaux 1er Cru stands out in this range, with its striking bouquet redolent of deep spice and floral notes. Macerated cherry, spice, freshly cut flowers and licorice all take shape, lifted by bright acids that confer notable energy. A few years in bottle will help this come together a bit more fully. ANTONIO GALLONI

…the palate impression of the medium weight flavors is fresh, bright and energetic with good detail and volume that continues onto the more overtly mineral-driven if also more austere finale. Promising. BURGHOUND

  41. Piero Busso Barbaresco Albesanii Viti Vecchie Riserva 2016
Piero Busso Barbaresco Albesanii Viti Vecchie Riserva 2016
Very stylish and textural, with a fine-grained structure, dominated by red fruits. Firm tannins back up the nicely textured fruit, which shows great concentration. An intense wine showing such finesse.
    (96) JAMIE GOODE, Wineanorak

Introduced in 2015, Busso’s Gallina Viti Vecchie is drawn from a small parcel of 1953 vines planted in the heart of the Gallina cru. The soil in this part of the vineyard is rich in calcareous clay (bluish-grey marl), but there is also some sand. Piero Busso describes this wine has having more depth, structure and enveloping fruit than the younger-vine cuvée. Consequently, the grapes are macerated for up to 60 days with a submerged cap and the aging is in large Slavonian oak casks for 36 months, prior to another 36 months in bottle.

Remi Jobard Volnay Les Santenots 2022 1er
An exuberantly floral-suffused nose speaks mainly of spicy red and dark pinot fruit scents. The middleweight flavors are not especially dense but they possess a positively gorgeous texture that is at once punchy but lilting, all wrapped in a refined, balanced and impressively long finale. This is lovely with the potential to match. 94 BURGHOUND

NUMBER 14 IN KERIN OKEEFE’S TOP 100 ITALIAN WINES OF 2023
Hailing from the firm’s prime vineyard in the Bricco Boschis cru, Cavallotto’s magnificent 2017 Riserva Vigna San Giuseppe opens with classic Barolo aromas of new leather, forest floor, tobacco and ripe berry that mingle with floral scents of dog rose and iris. Full-bodied but smooth and enveloping, the firmly structured palate combines power and finesse, featuring succulent Morello cherry, ripe cranberry, star anise and baking spice accompanied by tightly knit, refined tannins. Fresh acidity – impressive given the scorching vintage – keeps it well balanced. (98) KERIN OKEEFE
